ONS is next. But first I am away for a day or two with the missus as we hit the big 25 years together as a married couple today. I hear you get less time for murder these days
Not too gentle with him
Bring it on

Questionnaire for ONS
1. As Leeds fans we are born to hate Man U. What other teams do you dislike?

3. What is your favourite football related joke?

5. You are stranded on a desert island that has plenty of food and water. What three things would you like to have with you?
6. Ken Bates is bringing out his own brand of Cologne. What would be a good name for it?
7. What are your best and worst days as a Leeds supporter?
8. If Leeds get promoted this year what teams would you like to see go up with us & what teams would you like to see go down?

1. As Leeds fans we are born to hate Man U. What other teams do you dislike?
It’s probably too long a list, especially as I detest any team when they’re beating us. True to say though that any team that has supporters who enjoy and get away with gesturing throat-cutting to us are high on the list. And any club whose fans hate us, then the feeling is usually reciprocated. That Turkish team, and Millwall and Cardiff are there for obvious reasons, though Cardiff effectively set off the nightmare of the Ridsdale & O’Leary era on the pitch. I’m a placid sort of bloke generally, but if someone offends or tries to upset those close to me - including my football club - then I do tend to lose some personal sanity! I know many of us as Leeds fans have been guilty of singing about the Munich disaster - I definitely was, in the ‘70s and early ‘80s - but I don’t do it now and I don’t agree with anyone who does, but I don’t regard it as serious as more recent events, simply because of the time elapsed. I’ve got a wee bit of malice against Real Madrid too, that’s based only on Franco’s fascists supporting the club long before I and even the older forummers were born! Football is a dirty business and I can almost guarantee that no club is remotely innocent these days.
2. Uncle Ken’s car has broken down in the middle of a downpour, do you. (A) Give him a lift or (B) Drive over the puddle he is standing in front of?
Seeing as I don’t have a car, it’s difficult to answer. What I probably would do is take him indoors for a while, give him a cup of tea, maybe even some biscuits, and then ask him for the truth on all things Leeds United. All the while I would be secretly recording the conversation and then after helping him get to his destination (I wouldn’t lend him the taxi fare though) I would find as many suitable ways to broadcast & publicise the conversation. I’d also demand an answer as to why I never got a reply from him in his early Leeds days after sending him a copy of ‘Fanthology’ as a welcome gift.
3. What is your favourite football related joke?
My mate Gary Kaye told this one at some or other book do he was appearing at. ‘My wife was having a go at me, again, and she accused me of loving Leeds United more than I love her.’ I said that that wasn’t really true, because I love Man United more than I love you!’
4. Is goal line technology a good thing or is it the prawn sandwich middle class stealing the game away from the working class?
It’s a good thing, it’s nothing to do with class, it’s to do with us all - the players, managers, supporters, fans, getting ‘robbed’ of fair play - like Lampard’s goal against Germany in the last World Cup. It probably wouldn’t have mattered but it was a disgraceful oversight & decision not to allow it. I’m just pleased there wasn’t such technology around in 1966!
5. You are stranded on a desert island that has plenty of food and water. What three things would you like to have with you?
A magic genie & lamp so I can wish for more. My loved ones (cheat of an answer, sorry), music and full, free easy access to all TV channels I want, including the nookie ones
6. Ken Bates is bringing out his own brand of Cologne. What would be a good name for it?
I can think of plenty of VERY offensive titles but I’ll just go for a French name - ‘Voleur’ - as it sounds exotic (in that language) and says everything it needs to in our language.
7. What are your best and worst days as a Leeds supporter?
Worst day STILL is the horrible May night in 1982 down at West Brom. Not only did I hitchhike there and back, not only did Leeds effectively get relegated after losing 2-0, not only did I nearly get chinned by a ‘tough’ Leeds fella for allegedly pushing and not only did I get left stranded miles away from home, I also got arrested. And not for rioting or anything as interesting but for jaywalking as I’d been dropped off at Hartshead Moor motorway service station and couldn’t get a lift back. 1975 was extremely bad too of course, and I remember that I woke myself up in bed a few times crying after the referee sorry Bayern Munich had robbed us of the European Cup. Any defeat in a big game hurts, even now at 47 years old. I ‘switch off’ better than I used to, but there are moments when the stomach still churns and the heart still seems to miss a beat and feels like its been punched.
Best days is more difficult to answer, but enjoyably of course. The season we got back to Division One under Howard Wilkinson, that was brilliant because there really was a hard core of lads supporting the team through the grim ‘80s, and all capped off with a great night around town with mates who’d been there for the team through thin and thinner! The quality of football had been good for most of the season and a lot of fans came back to Elland Road, it was all a really good buzz again, after Eddie Gray and then Billy Bremner had been pretty much shafted by the Leeds board. Those directors redeemed themselves well though by hiring Wilko, I doubt there were many Leeds fans who thought he WOULDN’T succeed. Wilko’s side then made a big impact on the top division the following season, capped off not long afterwards with the fantastic League Championship win. We were regularly treated to truly superb games and that title triumph was made all the sweeter because we’d beaten man u to do it. I remember when Villa won the League over Ipswich Town - some people accused them of ‘nicking it’ as Ipswich had been the better, allegedly more entertaining team all season. That same sort of jibe was aimed at Leeds by equally deluded people talking bullshit! I’ve had the Mickey taken out of me many times over the years for being foolishly optimistic where Leeds and England have been involved, but I can honestly say that I was the only Leeds fan I know who said that we would still win the title even after getting pasted at Man City late that season. I looked at all our and man u’s remaining fixtures and predicted nearly all of them right. ‘Man U won’t win at Luton or Liverpool, and they won’t beat Man City at Old Trafford, and they’ll lose at West Ham, I’m telling you!’ (I went to that West Ham game too, in the home end, Kenny Brown got the winner at that end ).
And the home win this century over Bristol Rovers was sweet, especially as we did it, yet again, the hard way with Max Gradel getting himself sent off and Leeds going behind 1-0. I still had the belief then too, but course I was far from on my own. Had a great night too that night, I’d intended going round town with my girlfriend Sam and meeting up with the lads at various bars in town. But everywhere was rammed so we spent most of the night in the Adelphi where we were honoured to have the company of BBC Radio Leeds’ match commentator Adam Pope. He’d got back to base after covering the game at Elland Road and he wanted to celebrate, even though he’s not actually a Leeds fan. So he asked if he could join us. As if he needed an answer!
8. If Leeds get promoted this year what teams would you like to see go up with us & what teams would you like to see go down?
Any team that deserves to go up gets my respect, even if it’s Huddersfield. (It won’t be). I’m possibly one of the few Leeds fans who doesn’t feel much malice towards other Yorkshire clubs, so Sheff Wednesday can join us if they like! Naturally, it would be nice to see Millwall and Cardiff get relegated, but I’m honestly not that fussed. It’s always sneakily pleasing for me to see big clubs suffering in the Prem, so I wouldn’t be upset for one of them to come down. Liverpool are struggling at the moment, and Spurs, and Villa. But I definitely want Norwich to return to this division.
9. If Leeds were to have a third bronze statue at the ground who would it be and why?
A good question! There won’t be one though but if there WAS then by rights I think it should be John Charles. Not only was he a true great but he helped the club hugely when sold to Juventus in the late 50s as the club was in dire straits due to the West Stand being burned down. Like lots of fans I was lucky to meet him a few times, and he was best pal of my first ever boss, a chap called Eric Kelshaw who I recently learned had died in January this year. One of my weirdest and proudest pub moments was being served a pint of Tetley Bitter by Peter Lorimer (my favourite player for a long time) at his pub The Commercial, and then John Charles collecting the eventually empty glass off me! He was as pleasant as everyone always says.
10. Beer, wine or spirits?
Beer in pubs every time, wine often at home (preferably not white) and spirits only if there’s none of the above two available. Especially when someone else is paying I’ve been a right piss-head in my time, I loved the socialising and everything that came with the good nights out (of which there have been many) but I always stuck to my principles of not having alcohol at home as I knew I would be in danger of becoming an alcoholic. This was especially true if I was having a difficult time emotionally. It’s the same with my not really regretting missing out on going to Uni straight after school (I was a ‘mature’ student earlier this century) because I suspect bigtime that not only would I have dropped out of whatever studies I was doing but I’d have become a drunk AND a junkie, possibly to a perilous level too. I bet this answer is a lot longer than you wanted or expected
THANKS Garper
