I've been racking my grey cells today trying to think when "the salute" started ? Are we the only team in the world that fans greet each other in such a way and where was the furthest you have been and had "the salute" ?

Mine was Arizona saw a Leeds fan and gave him "the salute" he returned it and ended up having a beer together

Don't know if its true but read somewhere that Glynn Snodin started the salute
The furthest (from Leeds of course) was Sydney railway station just before last years Yeovil game and was waiting to meet up with Deebo when a young boy ran up to us and started doing the Leeds salute, not far away was his father doing the salute in the Hungry Jacks resturant, pure class!!!

It certainly became popular around that time, Vinnie Jones made it very cult when he adopted it during the season we went up.

I must admit that I don't recall it in the seasons before Glynn Snodin played for us. In fact I'm sure he did it when he scored against Oxford United at Elland Road in the opening game of the 88/89. Its probably on YouTube somewhere!

I heard somewhere the salute should be done with the left hand? Something to do with it being from nearer the heart.

Your right mate. It did start with the left hand but over time it has switched to the right. I can only remember Snods doing it in the late 80's. Can't recollect seeing it before. Then Vinnie took it on. As for modern day players Jonny does it obviously and I think Max has a penchant for the old salute.

Think I read somewhere that the nazi's did a salute similar to ours and they did it with the right arm. So the correct way is using the left arm.

I use my left arm as I'm left handed, so to me that seems the natural thing to do

P.S. Have banged elbows a few times over the years though, when I've been sat/stood next to one of you right handed lot!!

I've been known to use both arms.

Two memorable occasions, the first at Taronga Zoo in Sydney 1000km from home, when I was wearing a Leeds cap, we chatted and laughed about us being Effing everywhere.
The last time was about 6 weeks ago, I'd been invited to speak to a new group of bank recruits and at the drinks afterwrds, my iphone covered was spotted. He just stood there, to attention, saluting until he got my attention, very funny, and we chat regularly now.
