At the Coldplay concert last night, everyone was given a wristband. It was an amazing site when it went dark as they were able to send some sort of signal to the bands that made them light up - imagine 50 odd thousand (I am guessing that figure as I havent heard the actual figure) fashing wristbands in all sorts of colours. Amazing.
Point of the story though, the bloke handing out the bands offered me a red one... without even thinking about it I said "I can't wear bloody red" and swapped it for a blue and yellow one! I am not as paranoid as some over the colour red (the wife bought a red car and I do drive it if needs be) but last night it was just an automatic response!
Incidentally the concert was probably the best I have ever been to. The attention to detail in organising the show was fantastic and there was something spectacular going on for the whole show. There were the wrist bands, the 5 huge screens behind the stage, hundreds of coloured beach balls launched into the crowd and constantly bobbing about, the band suddenly appeared on a little podium at the opposite end to the main stage "just to give you fans at the back a closer look at us", lasers, you name it.
A mate of mine once said that it is "events" that make life worth living, that is what we remember, believe me last night was one hell of an event! Our tickets cost £49.50 each, but compared with say £25 for a ticket to a game, it put football "entertainment" in perspective for me.

Glad you enjoyed it, I would try and make sure I enjoyed every single thing about the gig at that price. That's not a dig at the band, just at the gig biz.
I actually bought Parachutes and really liked it, then the second when it came out and then their third. The albums went down in quality in that order for me but I've nothing against CM or Gwyneth, who for some reason seem to annoy a lot of people .
Straight question DW, how many gigs have you been to then?

They've been doing the wristbands for a while though I think Chris Martin is regretting it judging by this article

Blimey, that is a question! That was my first Coldplay concert live and, as far as I can remember, the biggest I have ever been to. In the "old" days (I am talking late seventies and eighties) I would go and see some band or other most weeks but that was before the arrival of the big light shows and mega-bucks ticket prices. In recent years I have been to very few but it is something that I want to do more of as I am fascinated by the methods some of the big artists employ to make the shows such "events". The Australian Pink Floyd Show was the last one I did, a couple of months ago, and that was a fabulous light show too. You seem to suggest that £50 for a ticket is a lot and I agree it is BUT the point I was making is that in terms of value for money in providing a "wow" factor, the show last night was so good that had I paid £100 for the ticket (which many did) I would still have considered it good value. Being a regular footie fan, I have believed for years that we should be given more of a "show" at a game. I admire the clubs that do try to put stuff on before the games - I know it is possibly tacky sometimes, but again, the price of a football ticket these days has put each match in the category of a rare day out for many. As such it needs to be a memorable event. Hence a few cheerleaders, a kids 5-aside game, marching bands, forces display, falconry, the list is endless, should be added in.
As to the Coldplay music I agree with you - and hence what made it even more of a night for me was that they did most of their "anthems" and of course the whole crowd joined in! Another contrast with the football was how we were able to go and get food and beer and take it back to our seats - although that has it's problems as then there is a lot of "excuse me can I get past" going on all night - something that can get very annoying at big rugby matches I have found. As I get older I am conscious that I want to be entertained when I part with my cash!

That's actually a very reasonable price to see one of the top bands.
I was up in Harrogate last week & Elton John was playing at the Show Ground, some people I know were paying £85 for a ticket.
I was at the Mothers In law who lives only a stones throw from the Showground so we got to hear him free.

Heavily disagree with the need for pre-match or half time entertainment at football games. No point adding them just for the sake of making people feel like they get value for money. As we keep banging on about in the LUFC topics, the main show a football fan wants to see is from his football team.
I do agree completely about the massive concert events, and that 50 quid is an alright price, considering the kind of show the big bands put on nowadays. I've only been to some small local gigs since I've been here, but have a shortlist of about half a dozen acts I must see in the near future. Looking forward to Muse playing the MEN this autumn, should make up for the fact that I couldn't get there for Rammstein earlier this year. Both supposed to be quite a moving experience live, almost literally.

Ah that probably explains something else! At the end of the show, the big screens had a banner requesting that we handed back the wristbands by dropping them into "the bins provided". But we didn't spot any bins so we kept ours! They have probably opted for the "not being sued" option. I have seen posts on twitter from folk who are collecting them, and putting new batteries in them, so that they can decorate themselves at the next Coldplay concert they go to! All I can say is that it was bloody effective seeing these little flashing lights all over the stadium and it was a major part of the spectacle so it is easy to understand why Chris Martin is so keen to keep them going. Did I mention the Etihad? Wow! Never been there before, but what an amazing stadium that is. We were with someone with links to Man City who reckoned that the stage, the lighting and camera rigs, and all the other paraphenalia made the place look small....but it looked massive to me and is right up there with Wembley and the Emirates. Only thing they are crap at is the parking! We were in the main City car park right at the ground but we were queued for an hour and a half without moving after the game as the police seemed to have closed every road around the stadium! Got home at 2 am!

it is easy to understand why Chris Martin is so keen to keep them going.
It is also easy to understand why CM is saying it's making them bankrupt. If everyone's as "honest" as you in returning the wristbands, I can see where they may be overspending needlessly.

But don't you think that the pricing of top football now is almost demanding it become a show, because many folk just can't afford to go every week? I had 5 hours of entertainment at Belle View last week watching stock car racing and that cost me just £16 and £14 for my lad as a student. I firmly believe something has to change with football - either the show has to become worth the money, or the players have to take a wage cut! ie that seems to be the only way that admission prices could be trimmed!
I think people generally will start to look at the cost in terms of what else they could be "enjoying" instead and if nothing is done I would expect attendances to start to creep down. Dunno if I am the only fan thinking this or not. As you know, for me, a lot of the enjoyment I get from going to watch Leeds, is the pre-match banter in the Pavilion, or a pub somewhere for an away game. That costs even more of course, but it means I get the "entertainment" of a full day out. If it was just about watching football I think I would be tempted to go watch Worcester City every week for £11 a go. (Just pondered that for a couple of minutes and am wondering how strong my current addiction to watching Leeds is and whether I am talking b******s or not!)

Perhaps, but I wouldn't feel avenged if it cost just as much, but it featured cheerleaders, a short Pigeon Detectives concert and a half time lottery. My choice of going or not would still be based on whether I think the football experience is worth it. And to be fair, attendances haven't exactly dwindled in this league (PL + FL) over the last years. Most of the PL teams with decent support sell out every week, despite some pretty hefty prices.
