The Only Way is Up (baby)
Well, here is the current squad (on the assumption the eleven never play for us again).

First Team Squad

Goalkeepers

Andy Lonergan
Alex Cairns

Defenders

Patrick Kisnorbo (injured)
Tom Lees
Leigh Bromby (injured)
Aidy White

Midfielders

Michael Brown
Danny Pugh
Robert Snodgrass
Zac Thompson

Strikers

THE Robbie Rogers
Luciano Becchio
Davide Somma (injured)
Ross McCormack

Reserves and Youths
Sam Byram (full back)
Charlie Taylor (full back)
Lewis Turner (full back / midfield)

Nathan Turner (midfield / centre back)
Charlie Clamp (midfield)
Simon Lenighan (midfield)

Dominic Poleon (striker)

So, for me, I think NW wants:

1 x keeper
2 x centre backs (of which Pearce is one)
1 x full back
2 x midfielders
1 x pacy winger
1 x striker

Depending on how contract talks go, injuries / recoveries etc. that could easily be 10-12 new players, but at a bare minimum he's after 8 players to walk striaght into the first team.

The kids will be back up only (depending upon what he's seen - I suspect only Zak will feature regularly, instead of Clayton or on the bench).

What about Monty Gimpel.

Is he already signed with us as a pro?

He's on a scholars contract - as he's at University I believe. Still listed on the website but not yet on a pro contract. There are other "scholars" too.

This is what Wilkinson did as soon as he took over...

Wilkinson set about building a team capable of promotion.

Key acquisitions included Gordon Strachan from Manchester United, Vinnie Jones, Mel Sterland, Lee Chapman and Chris Fairclough. He also began to bring players through from the youth team, including David Batty (actually a product of the Bremner era) and Gary Speed.

In the 1989-90 season Leeds finally won promotion back to the First Division after an absence of eight years. Leeds were promoted as Second Division Champions.

Wilkinson continued to rebuild the team, discarding players such as Jones who had been brought in specifically to deal with the physicality of second division football, and bringing in John Lukic (the club's first £1m signing), Chris Whyte and Gary McAllister. The club finished the 1990-91 season in 4th place in the First Division, and the board continued to make money available to Wilkinson, allowing the signings of Tony Dorigo, Steve Hodge, Rod Wallace and Eric Cantona.

Striker, quality midfielders, a couple from the youth team, a full back - there's six of what we need.

Let's hope lightning strikes twice and we find our new, Sergeant Warnock's Barmy Army.

Couldn't think of anyone else to provide sufficient depth over than Melchiot.
And with Smith... see brackets.

I know that. Do you think Smith will be able to cut it tho anymore?

How about Billy Jones from W.B.A or Luke Chambers from Forest?

Billy Jones is contracted until 2014 but Chambers' contract expires in 2012 so we should go for him

So, for me, I think NW wants:

1 x keeper
2 x centre backs (of which Pearce is one)
1 x full back
2 x midfielders
1 x pacy winger
1 x striker

On the whole, I agree, and I think you've got it mostly right. But there are two things I would like to point out:

1. I don't think NW sees Aidy White as a left back. Not only did he bring in Robinson, but how often did NW play him there? Not much. And Pugh wasn't the answer either. So I think he's also looking for a left back.
2. THE Robbie Rogers isn't a striker, he's a pacy winger. With White's speed and relative lack of height (for a defender), that's the only position he can fill as well. So I think NW will let those two battle it out for that position.

Thus, I think the list is:
1 x keeper
2 x center backs
2 x fullbacks
2 x midfielders
1 x striker

USA - I agree with you on both points, and he also has Charlie Taylor, Zac Thompson, and some of the Turner twins and other youths are also full backs, so he could fill it from within.

However, I changed my mind whilst writing my original post, because I CAN see NW bringing in two full backs and using the kids as cover.

With regards to TRR - indeed he is a winger, but I am hoping to see Snoddy more central next season, and so think he might go for another winger in order to get the ball into the box a lot for Luciano and whichever huge, galumping centre forward he brings in.

This season it's about quality AND quantity it seems.

(make a bloody change from the last transfer windows)

Welcome Jason, on a four year deal no less, and apparently we have paid £500k all in a lump sum to Pompey.
