Can Warnock build a squad for under £12m for the year?
Much was talked last year by Bates about "Simon's pot" and the budget which he was given for transfers and wages. Apparently it was up to him how he utilised the funds available to him and I,for one, actually agreed with Bates that we had too many guys on the books who were basically only reserve team players picking up a wage. This reduced the amounts we could maybe spend in areas to really attract the players to improve our side. Either way, it looks like we're stuck with Bates for another while so making the most of a bad situation and playing by his rules. If I remember correctly we were over this "budget" and were heading for spending somewhere around the £12m mark for our wages/transfers last year.
I've done my own workings and calculations for the season ahead based around the retained players list, players we hope will sign extensions to their contracts and perspective new signings. I've made sweeping assumptions and estimates of what our players are earning so it is by no means accurate but I do feel it's realistic (and achievable).

Goalkeepers Weekly Yearly
Lonergan. 6k. 312k
Cairns. 1k. 52k
New Signing. 10k. 520k

Defenders
Lees. 7k. 312k
Pearce. 10k. 520k
White. 7k. 364k
New Signing. 10k. 520k
New Signing. 10k. 520k
Thompson. 1k. 52k
Taylor. 1k. 52k
Lewis Turner. 1k. 52k

Midfielders
Snodgrass. 18k. 936k
Pugh. 7k. 364k
Brown. 7k. 364k
New Signing. 10k. 520k
New Signing. 10k. 520k
New Signing. 10k. 520k
Nathan Turner. 1k. 52k
Lenighan. 1k. 52k

Forwards
Becchio. 15k. 780k
McCormack. 10k. 520k
Somma. 6k. 312k
New Signing. 10k. 520k
Poleon. 1k. 52k

Total (above). 8,788,000
Allowance for bonuses (say 10%) 879,000
New Signings
Pearce Cost 500,000
New signing 1 cost. 1,000,000
New signing 2 cost. 750,000
New signing 3 cost. 500,000
New signing 4 cost. 500,000
New signing 5 cost. 500,000
New signing 6 cost. Free
New signing 7 cost. Free
Sale of players
Clayton. -1,000,000
Others -1,000,000
Net Cost for the year including
transfer fees and annual wages 11,417,000
1 goalkeeper plus 1 young pro plus 1 new signing
3 defenders plus 3 young pro defenders plus 2 new signings
3 midfielders plus 2 young pro midfielders plus 3 new signings
3 forwards plus 1 young pro forward plus 1 new signing
Total senior pro squad = 24

The net spend based on the above calculations comes under £12,000,000 for the year including all player wages. This does not take from any monies received last year from player sales (kasper, max and Johnny) of say £5m.
I accept that this is based on massive estimates and ALL of the figures above are open to debate and question but I really do think it allows us to compete for decent players in the transfer market and at the same time, keep within the budget restriction placed by Bates. I've included names for some of the academy guys we hope will be in and around the squad for the coming season. There may be others but I've just included them for calculation puposes more than anything. I've averaged out our new signings as being paid £10k/week.
As I say, ALL of the above is pure speculation but I reckon it can be done.

Personally given our turnover and financial fair play restrictions. I believe we should be spending circa £17 m on wages with a net spend of £4 to 5m. Hopefully that should deliver a sustained promotion challenge ....with the increased spend self financing as a result of an increase in gates by an average of 5,000 net revenue circa £4m.

Player registrations can amortised over the lengths of their contracts, therefore club should maintain a marginal profit.

I agree wholeheartedly that we should be spending more on the playing side of Leeds United but as I say we're stuck with bates for the time being. I've said before that I think our wage to turnover ratio is way too low, even allowing for financial prudence.
My point was I reckon we can compete and sign far better quality than we have been doing and even still stick within the old tight arse's spending parameters.
Hopefully warnock has persuaded him to allow him a budget of say £15m rather than the £11m to £12m I've run with for my calculations. You never know, maybe the money received for the sales of kasper, max and Johnny will be made available to him to add to his war chest....I doubt it but you never know.

Brown has been offered substantially less than he is currently on, Warnock thinks this is fair as this means Brown will still be playing in the championship & not having to drop to league 1

Sound analysis Barney however Snoddy at 18K is a wee bit OTT. I understand that Norwich currently are operating on a salary cap of 15k which seems very sensible in view of the present economical climate. I would think our top players either new coming in or existing would hover around the 10k to 12k including incentive bonus don't you think?

I went with 18k a week for snoddy as that has what has been widely reported as the figure he's been offered. How true that is I'm not sure but I think it's probably correct considering the contract offer will make him the highest paid player at the club and again,it had been widely reported that becchio was on 15k a week and had previously been the club's highest earner. Seem to remember o'brien was supposedly on similar.
It is very much assumptions and guess work based around hearsay and what has been reported so it could be way off,who knows!

Welcome to our forum.

18k for Snoddy isn't exaggerated, I don't think. It's a number that's been circulated a few times and it seems reasonable. I very much doubt Norwich work on a 15k max policy either. It may have been valid for much of their squad in the Championship, but they wouldn't have been competitive in signing many players with that kind of limitations, especially after promotion.

Norwich operating on a cap of £15k is definitely not true as Howson is earning £26k per week.

I am going by what was reported in the press a couple of weeks back and in view of Norwich's previous financial collapse a few years back I could understand Delia and Co not wanting to fall into the same trap again. If it is as you say that NW has offered Snoddy 18K to stay then it is only understandable that Ross is asking for compatibility. The trouble with such a wide difference in pay scales throughout the first eleven and regular squad players is that it can become very divisive as after all it is a team game and if your top earners under perform then we have a "trouble in the mill" scenario. I am more in favour of basic salary plus performance bonus structure with a clause built in for loyalty and further enhancement should we get promoted. That would in some way would be difficult to structure for those in the greater squad but not impossible.

Thanks for that Enzo, it just goes to show you can't believe what is written in the press. Must have been submitted by an Ipswich hack!
