on SBS Football Patrick Kisnorbo aims to go from forgotten man to front and centre of Australia’s World Cup qualifying campaign as he returns from his latest injury agony.
The 30-year-old defender, who has 18 caps for his country and was a certain pick for the 2010 World Cup before a ruptured Achilles wrecked his hopes, is ready to return to action for Championship Leeds United in the new season as he bids to resurrect his jinxed career.
Rubbed out in January with a cruciate ligament injury, Kisnorbo’s crushing blow spelled the end of the club’s faint promotion hopes and compounded the misery of the previous season in which he featured just once for Leeds following his Achilles tendon torture.
But an impending trip to the surgeon this week looks set to give the former Hearts and Leicester City centre-back the green light to resume training and begin putting back together the fragments of his future.
Recently returned to England after six weeks of intense work with physio Randall Cooper in his hometown of Melbourne, Kisnorbo told The World Game: “I’ve been working hard and if, as I expect, I get the all clear to start training I will be stoked.
“I’ve had some tough luck with the injuries and hopefully this year the luck will turn in my favour.
“I am due a full season and my hope is to do well for Leeds and also get back into the Australian national team.
“There were times when I thought that I was cursed. When I got the Achilles injury I was playing well and the same with the second knee injury. I was captain of the club and we were in a good position.
"Mentally, it was sometimes a case of asking ‘why me? I am still 30 and I would love to play for my country again. It was hard to take missing so many games for my club and also for Australia."
Kisnorbo’s nightmare injury run began in his penultimate season with Leicester where he was sidelined for over six months with a cruciate ligament injury.
And he was in form his career when he suffered the Achilles rupture in in March, 2010.
Despite the injury, he was still named the club’s player of the season after a series of heroic performances, not least the one against Manchester United at Old Trafford which saw the Whites knock Alex Ferguson’s men out of the FA Cup.
With a year to go on his Leeds deal and a rekindled sense of belief, Kisnorbo has put the demons which have dogged him to one side and is hungry to pile the pressure on Socceroos incumbents Sasa Ognenovski and skipper Lucas Neill.
“I know the hard work is just beginning but I am full of hope that things will turn around and I can play for my country at the World Cup. It’s not up to me, it’s down to the coach but I’d love to think that I’ve used up all the misfortune and only good things lie ahead now.
“I’ve missed a lot of football and I’d love to make up for lost time and extend my career … it would be good to play as long as somebody like Ryan Giggs and still be successful into my late 30s.
“But first things first. We have a new boss at Leeds (Neil Warnock) and I need to impress him to get back into the team first before anything can happen on the international front.
“He’s brought in some new players and the competition for places is going to be intense."

I don't think he will ever play for us again.

I'm sad to say it but I think Paddy will be a Squad player this season and will only come in for injuries. As for Australia I think he's going to need a full season of playing to be given any chance of pulling on the Socceroos jersey again.

TJ may be right, Paddy may well be sold after the takeover... who knows at this stage.
Mr R is probably more right, it's more reasonable for Paddy to warm the bench as additional cover (based on his experience and the expense of rehab). We saw it last time Paddy came back from injury, he was a lesser player and lacked confidence too.
As for a Socceroos jersey, if a certain Harry *cough* Kewell *cough* can get a spot on the bench then Paddy's spot is safe and sound (the whole Socceroos situation is )

I hope Paddy gets back playing again soon but can't see him getting back to a level we need him at,the injuries he's had would end most players careers so he's done incredibly well to get back even into the reckoning..Amazing we are here hoping Paddy gets back for our squad when we are supposedly getting taken over by a billionaire.I'm starting to get the feeling that bates will be still there come start of the season..

I've said it before we were really lucky to get a season out of Paddy, great player and attitude but I doubt we'll see him play for Leeds again.

Never write off Kissa. He will be back and you can guarantee he will be giving 100% every game.

I think he'll go into the season as 4th choice centre back, behind Lees, Pearce and one other... But Warnock isn't the type not to play him if he's doing well in training and there's a saying form is temporary, class is perminate - and Killa is class.

If he's back and genuinely fit he's like a new signing though isn't he?
