Re: The Damned United film

The big mistake was thinking of McGovern as a replacement for Giles or Bremner. In terms of skill he wasn't a patch on them, but Clough wasn't thinking that he was going to do a player for player replacement so as to continue with a similar team to Don's team. He was going to change everything. He d...

Re: The Damned United film

I've not read the book but I thought the film was terrific. It impressed me that they tried hard to find lookalikes for the Leeds players. The two main actors were brilliant. Someone complained that McGovern was a disaster for Leeds but in the long run he would have been a good buy. He proved himsel...

Re: Political investigative journalism

I talk politics quite a bit with a very intelligent woman who was brought up in Eastern Europe. She told me she feels sorry for the British because they are very naive. They think they are living in a democracy, but to her it just seems like her own country when she lived there. There only differenc...

Re: Why Leeds United ?

I also saw Raich Carter play. When I used to go and watch Everton in the late 1940's he played for Sunderland. Outstanding player. That's going back a long way. I can remember games from the early 60s and I think I am old. Here's a nice clip of Raich Carter training Hull. Don Revie makes an appeara...

Re: Why Leeds United ?

Contacted Leeds about playing football and Raich Carter, who was then manager, said 'sorry son you're too old'!!! Just to have talked to Raich Carter would have been interesting but for him to have told you that you were too old, well, that's really something. It's a bit funny as well, because Raic...

Re: Ethics ! Have you seen this!!??

I'm not sure if I agree with the poster's outrage about Amazon. I've had some terrible jobs and I don't think what I have read here is any worse than some of the things I have seen. As far as I can work out the jobs at Amazon mainly involve taking an order for a list of things then rushing around th...

Re: Are you vegetarian ?

If god wanted us to be vegetarian, why did she make animals out of MEAT !! I don't think they understand vegetarianism in France. I once explained to a waiter that I did not eat meat and I ordered a salad. When it came it looked wonderful but there was one item on the plate I didn't recogni...

Re: Worth watching on telly

Just finished watching True Detective series 2. Some parts were very good indeed but I never really felt as if I knew what was going on. I put that down to me not being very bright. I also think if a film is a bit confusing then people will think it is designed for a sophisticated audience. The view...

Re: Are you vegetarian ?

I have not knowingly eaten meat for about 35 years. The thought of eating meat makes me feel sick. Why on earth would you want to eat bit of some dead animal when there are so many other things you could eat that have not caused anything any harm. I must confess that I do eat fish occasionally. But ...

Eddie Gray

There aren't many players who have scored two world class goals in the same game.

Poor Peter Mellor. Whenever I saw him play he seemed to spend most of his time picking the ball out of the net.
