Re: Worth watching on telly
Agree about Prison Break, very far fetched, very entertaining, top notch telly. Disagree about the latter series being a let down, although none of them lived up to series 1 the rest were still at least 3.5-4 stars for me!
Im looking forward to series 7 of Sons of Anarchy and series 5 of Walking Dead later on this year.
Currently watching Eastbound and Down (funny but dont know where its going really - i'm on the third series) and Game of Thrones (just watched S.1 ep.6 & 7 last night) which I am thoroughly enjoying

Re: Worth watching on telly
I finally started watching Game Of Thrones this weekend.
As much as I love LOTR, I generally don't really find historical shows and movies all that interesting.
Tolkien's different because I grew up with it and I'd say the same about Terry Pratchett's discworld - I love what Sky has done with their adaptations of his books - but things like Gladiator, 300, etc tend to leave me cold.
That new Hercules movie looks stunning from the trailer and I probably will watch it because I go every week, but I wouldn't choose it over any sci-fi movie, no matter how crap the latter may look.
Sci-fi is my favourite genre by a million light years
Anyway .. a few people at work have been on at me to watch it so I started yesterday evening and ended up watching the first six episodes back to back
What I liked about it was it assumes a level of intelligence in the viewer, in that it doesn't have ANY sequences where the dialogue is explaining anything. You know in some movies or shows, you might have a two minute conversation that "confirms" what's been going on in terms of the plot ? Well there's not even an episode recap like on most American shows.
It's an HBO production so I guess that's to be expected but I found it a welcome relief.
The pace is pretty relentless too, which is great - I love how it cuts between the different story arcs and it reminds me a bit of the LOTR films in that respect: one moment you're in Winterfell, where it's cold and dark, the next you're in the desert lands or the capital city as you catch up with the other characters and what's happening to them.
There's a lot of sex but not as much as I'd been expecting - not that I'm disappointed
What I mean is, after watching Banshee it's actually quite tame
There's a lot of violence, though you'd expect that from any show set in a mediaeval milieu.
There's a lot of cursing, which I love. I'm with Stephen Fry on the swearing front: “The sort of twee person who thinks swearing is in any way a sign of a lack of education or a lack of verbal interest is just a f***ing lunatic.”
It's actually quite rare though, so when it does come up it's actually quite a jolt. They've got the balance just right.
I also love the fact there's LOADS of British actors in it, especially given that most of the accents are English as opposed to American.
There's one bloke I know is from the US but he's got it down pat and doesn't sound like Dick Van Dyke at all
All in all, if you've not watched it yet but are considering it, it's a definite thumbs up for me.
Even if you don't generally "do" period drama (which I normally loathe), fantasy or sci-fi, when you watch it you'll get the feeling it's proper "event" TV, like The Sopranos or The Wire.

Re: Worth watching on telly
I've just started watching Game of Thrones too, what a coincidence. The general plot is good, but everything around is disturbing - the incest, the major character deaths (NED! Why kill the Yorkshireman!?). I must say, why hasn't George R. R. Martin been locked away yet? A very disturbing mind. I've noticed that a lot of the characters from 'the North' have Northern accents. Done some further reading into the show and found out who dies when - chuffed to find out my favourite character, Jon Snow, remains alive. Joffrey is a very annoying little Pooh, to tell you the truth though, far too spoilt by his mother. And the nudity, there's quite a bit of it - based on the South Park episode parodying GoT, I thought there would be more phalluses, but, luckily, there has only been one so far. A lot of the time I find myself questioning whether certain cast members are porn stars who've been given the opportunity to branch out.

Blimey.
I know exactly what you mean about the phalluses.
I know I'm no John Holmes, but jeez ... I think the casting for this show would've been very interesting and worthy of a show itself
Some gorgeous women in it, though - that white haired nymphette queen is breathtaking

Agree about PB, as I mentioned before a tad far fetched but really enjoyable and after all that's what it's all about. Looking forward as well to WD 5 but partly to see if it picks up again after a disappointing series 4 which I thought was a bit flat. I felt they where trying to strengthen the characters but lost a bit of the flow to the series.
PS It took me a while whilst watching PB to finally remember where I'd saw Dr. Sarah Tencredi before, although in real life the timeline is the other way around.

When I found out she was playing a 13 year old in season 1 though... things got a bit real.rigger wrote:Blimey.

Feel so sorry for Sansca, right now, really taking one for the team here. If I hadn't bought the boxxset for seasons 1-3 I may have stopped watching when I thought Brann was dead. Killing a 10 year old seems a little too overboard. You can kill teenagers, but children and you're stepping on thin ice.

SCI FI Rigger
Watched AVP last night for the first time decent couple of hours entertainment.
Plot pernickety piece ( I always have some, sad I know) at the end standing in the Antarctic in a Tee Shirt whilst a gale is blowing and not a sign of discomfort. Must have been the adrenalin.

Agree Si, in nearly any other show I'd be feel a little uncomfortable with some of the topics and plot but for some reason this doesn't worry me with GOT. Probably down to the writing and quality of the show.SiMamu wrote:When I found out she was playing a 13 year old in season 1 though... things got a bit real.rigger wrote:Blimey.
