Inspired by watching "Race across the World" and been a couple of travel/adventure fanatics Mrs SW and myself were planning to do some road/rail trips in various parts of the world using public transport. Ok a bit more forward planning than the contestants and more time in a few places we've done logistics of trips in South America, North America, Asia and New Zealand.

However with Covid any chance of doing them at this stage has been firmly put on hold.

Our new backpacks were gathering dust so last week we decided to do a rail tour of parts of England mixed in with a few walks in around some nice towns/cities. All in all we made 11 train journeys and stayed over 2 nights in Stratford upon Avon, Cheltenham & Shrewsbury, even got time to visit Cathy's sister for a vegetarian lunch

Averaged walking about 10 miles per day, some on travel days with the heavy back pack on, ate at some nice restaurants drank a few local beers and of course the compulsory well earned bottle of wine with the evening meal.

Trains i was worried about in this covid time but to be fair the big stations we travelled through (Leeds, Birmingham & Manchester) were well manned with one way systems. On the train everyone had to sit in window seats not together to social distance from anyone walking down the aisle. At end stations cleaners came on and cleaned seats, tables, door handles, etc. Guards never checked tickets (could have easily been cheaper ;) ) to avoid social contact.

We stayed at Premier Inns and there was no Room make up for your stay but making our own bed and using the same towels for two/three nights isn't really a problem. When you leave the rooms are given a deep clean and everything is changed including such as shower curtains.

Restaurants, shops and most Pubs were excellent with table service, track and trace system and tables well spread out. We did go in one Wetherspoon and they weren't bothered in our opinion so avoided other times. Credit to Green King Pubs the were really on the ball had someone on the door forcing people to use track & trace and sanitise hands before escorting you to a clean table.

Weather was excellent, really enjoyed it but a little tired today.

On another note Shrewsbury was a first visit for me and what a pleasant surprise its a lovely place and now up there on my top places to visit in the UK list

Only been to Shrewsbury the once to visit Gay Meadow which was on the banks of the River Severn ( in my ground hopping days ) the ball invariably would get kicked out of the ground & end up in the river where a couple of members of the Davies family would retrieve it & I’m assuming that the club paid them for each ball they retrieved. The used coracles to do this.

Just looked on the map to see where Gay Meadow as we did a decent walk along the river tuesday morning and looking at it we would have been directly opposite the site at some stage (clearly nothing left of it).

Talk about never too old to learn I've always thought if a place has a cathedral it becomes a City rather than a town. Apparently not as Shrewsbury does have a Cathedral (and an Abbey) but is still a Town.

Apparently they are not alone there are 25 towns with a Cathedral in the UK, can any members name any of them ?

I know Guildford has a cathedral as I walked past it several times going to the cricket last year & pretty certain it’s a town. Also where the daughter lives she went a christening pre Covid-19 at Northampton cathedral but the football club are Northampton Town so I’d say it’s a town.
Edit to say ‘er indoors reckons Carlisle is another Town with a cathedral
She’s cooking on gas ‘ere with Southwell here in the shire of Nottingham :D

A little story from Saturday night in Cheltenham.

We decided to eat in a Chinese restaurant which turned out excellent but that's not the story.

We were seated on the next table to a group of four a young couple (early 20's) and a Older couple. I think it was Mother, Father, Daughter & boyfriend.
Anyway boyfriend seemed to be doing a lot of talking and trying to impress the future in laws with his knowledge of football.
I'll point out at this stage he was clearly a Scum fan so I started to listen ;)

Anyway he started out explaining how Man City are only better than Scum because the have more money to spend and how it was unfair, I had to bite my tongue.

Soon his chat turned to Leeds now back in the Premier league, he continued of how he hates Leeds and every one calls them dirty Leeds because they only won things by kicking others off the park and their supporters are all thugs.
He then turned on Don Revie saying how crap he was as a manager and how stupid Leeds were getting rid of Brian Clough who turned out the greatest thing since sliced bread winning the Champions league.

I managed to keep my mouth shut until we paid the bill and turned round and said politely something like -

"Sorry I couldn't help hearing your football conversation and think you got a few things wrong"

"First Clough never won the Champions League it was for Champions but called the European Cup not teams finishing in the top four like your team strives for. He also achieved nothing without two things, Peter Taylor the brains of the outfit at his side who didn't come to Leeds and by been the biggest spenders buying the first £1mill footballer and worlds most expensive goalkeeper."

"As you criticise Man city for spending isn't that the same much like your club been the biggest spenders in 14 of the first 16 years of the Premiership"

They were sat gobsmacked by this time but I didn't stop :D

"As for Don Revie you slagged off one of the greatest managers of all time that dominated the English Game with a team he built for 10 years a fact other great managers of that period including Busby & Shankly confirmed many times.

I'll finish by saying "you are lucky that Leeds fans are not all thugs or instead of pointing out the facts I would have just smacked you in the gob which may have caused offence"

"Enjoy your evening"

Then I left, not a word in return.
