Quite a big "era" there given One Flew came out in 75 and Pond in 81.
Personally, I love the Dirty Harry series - the first three or four fall firmly in that bracket.
There's some cracking Woody Allen comedies from around that time - Annie Hall and Manhatten are stand-outs.
Early De Niro magic in Taxi Driver from 77, The Deer Hunter and Midnight Express from 79, Elephant Man from 81.
That's a list of Oscar nominees that I like :)

As for others, some of which are just outside your date range, how about The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash, Night Moves, Dark Star, Silent Running, The Conversation, Play Misty For Me, The Boys From Brazil, The Parallax View, Being There and The Day of the Jackal.

Cheers Rigs have ordered The Day of the Jackall & Deer Hunter. Hoping to watch From Time To Time tonight if the DVD arrives at a decent time, it’s due to be delivered between 16:00-17:00 today. Hugh Boneville, Maggy Smith & Tim Spall surely that’s a recipe for a good movie.

I would thoroughly recommend The Conversation from that list. Gene Hackman is always good and this has just the right blend of tension and drama to make an excellent thriller, especially given most people have never heard of it.

Slightly off tack, but if you want another recommendation about a surveillance themed movie, then the German film In The Lives Of Others is superb.
It centres on a Stasi officer in East Berlin tasked with listening in on a "high living" couple, one a playwright the other an actor. It seems they listen to western music, watch their films, smoke their cigarettes, etc. I won't say anymore but it's brilliant, again with lots of suspense.

One of the best boxing pictures is Cinderella Man, tells the story of James Braddock during the Great Depression.
Great story even if you are not into boxing pics.
With a Leeds Fan in the lead role of course
