1. Handbags and Gladrags - Stereophonics Written by Mike D'Abo of Manfred Mann and recorded by Rod Stewart although this probably wasn't the first recording.
12. Private Life - Grace Jones The Pretenders
Good luck everyone, they're not easy and I'll be very impressed if anyone knows any of the original artists on any of these songs. I have them all and hundreds more too and will reveal all the answers when you've had chance to have a think.

Selby has a point for Racey doing Mickey (as 'Kitty') and Sniffer has 2 points for Mike D'Abo doing 'Handbags' and The Pretenders doing Private Life first. Come on Rigger only 17 to get though you also got a point for Private Life. A few were the writers of the song like no 7, no 9 and no 19, some are album tracks picked up by other artists eg The Bump and She's The One and some have been hits in other countries eg Kiss Kiss a Turkish club track and Dancing In The Moonlight recorded in the early 70's in Australia by a pretty unknown band and later covered in the USA by King Harvest and in the UK by Hi Broom and The Young Generation long long before Toploader finally took it into the charts. There's quite a good source for researching, a guy named Arnold Ruypens. I start with him first - he's not always correct but it's a really interesting read. I then try and locate the actual track, get it onto disc or mp3 and build up a portfolio playing the odd one on a Friday or occasionally a whole round's worth at my Pop Quiz.

That's like saying "How come you don't like Coldplay/U2/Take That/Abba/Adele/the boy Sheeran ?"

I have zero interest in getting any of them right

I'm quite proud that I knew two, to be honest.
I used to get people asking me what was number one in the charts and I rarely knew but could show them to someone who did. I'd then shuffle off back to my section ...

I understand Riggs, you're not going to like or know everything, nobody is, not even a top DJ. I did say at the start I'd be impressed if anybody got any, it's a specialist area I know that, I just thought it would be fun to test such as your good self on the subject.

I was totally stumped by all except the ones I gave, Having now looked them up (I won't give any more answers, don't worry) I have to say that some versions of a few of these songs were recorded so close together that it's a moot point as to which was the cover and which was the original. Especially if they were written by a third party. And if a songwriter adds new lyrics to an earlier song, to the extent that he gets 50% of the songwriting royalties when another person covers his version, which was the original song? And where would that place Whole Lotta Love by Led Zep? As an original song? As a blatant rip-off of You Need Loving by the Small Faces? Or a souped up version of Willie Dixon's You Need Love? Well, we know the answer to that one as it got sorted to an extent in court.

As ever Mr EmleyWhite you are the master of musical obscurity. I'm just kicking myself and didn't guess the name for "Gladrags" original. :)

Ah. Having spent far too long typing up a reply I now see I've been credited for Mike D'Abo. Did he actually record it as a single? I though he offered it to Chris "Out Of Time" Farlowe first.

Hi Sniffer, D'Abo did record it first I have his version then offered it to Farlowe who had a small hit with it. Rod Stewart and others later did theirs. I know what you mean about the moot point, I tend to steer clear of the dodgy ones especially when the big national Pop Quiz events are on. There are some guys deeper into it than me and I've been picked up on in the past with the odd mistake so these guys really know their stuff. Thanks for your kind words anyway, I'm far from being the master, I just love the subject so much, I put my heart and soul into every gig or Pop Quiz. I have 55 full CD's of original versions, a few on single and some on LP. If anyone would like lists or to hear or to know a particular track I'd be happy to help. So many good guys on this forum, really enjoy the way people get on so well. Will let some of the others have a crack at getting the others then I'll reveal all the answers in a few days.
