?...whelmed

Just about recovered from an amazing Nick Cave gig in Dublin last Wednesday night. Exceeded all my expectations.

Considering his trauma at losing his 15 year old son a while back (and subsequently writing a very dark album) I really didnt know what version of Nick we would see.

Anyone else remember an over / underwhelming experience at seeing something they anticipated?

Nina Simone, about six months before she died.
She was headlining a small blues festival down in the west country and she was drunk.
She staggered about, slurring her words, talking shyte and proceeded to play the piano like Les Dawson.

Utterly underwhelmed.

Plenty of Underwhelmed if think football and Leeds Utd, one particular sticks out for me was when the team didn't turn up for the 1996 League Cup final versus Villa.

Once in Houston when the Texas Music Festival was on so went along, worst music event I've ever been to. Long story but too many very mediocre acts, two stages at separate ends of a massive Park, red hot and nowhere to sit as grass was full of insects, just a horrible day.

Overwhelmed - Mrs SW took me for a Posh meal (you know them masterchef type meals where not much goes on the plate but it looks fancy). Thought on the way not really my scene as I'd prefer a good Steak but have to the tastes where absolutely amazing. Each plate was small but we got 9 courses although only 7 were advertised. Will admit we do know the owner so that was the reason for going.
The Chef was a former finalist in "Masterchef The Professionals" and one of the extras was the Sweet dish he did in the final.

First concert I ever went to was to see Slade at Queens Hall in Leeds, I know a lot Poopoo the Glam era but they were definitely a cracking live band, especially for a 14 or 15 year old attending his first concert.

Hazel O'Connor put on a great show at Selby Town Hall couple of years back, went along expecting her to be well past her best but she certainly wasn't.

There are a few ageing 60's soul stars that a friend has seen who have been a bit like that, Rigger. Singers whose voices have gone but still expect to be indulged because of what they did 40-50 years ago.

Personally the most underwhelming gig I can think of was actually a very recent one. I saw Plan B at the Colston Hall in Bristol last month. He's a talented bloke and I was looking forward to it but the sound was just abominable. Not his fault but there were times when he would be halfway through a song before I could work out which one it was.

The drink reference reminds me of a Jesus and Mary Chain gig just weeks before they (initially) broke up.

Lead guitarist William was so drunk/stoned onstage that his brother Jim had to walk over to silence his guitar at the end of some songs. He even reacted to a fan by throwing a bottle into the crowd!

I wasn't sure if it was the worst or greatest gig I ever saw. Part of me was disappointed as it was my first time seeing them live, but on the other hand, they lived up to their notorious reputation.
I subsequently saw them when they were off the hard stuff, so luckily I got the best/worst of both worlds.

Love my red wine so when I was given a bottle of red a few years ago that I knew cost 40 odd quid (far more than I'd ever pay) I thought this will be good made a great meal and sat down to enjoy .....it was like vinegar sooo bad I was totally underwhelmed. God that sounds such a 1st world problem.

1998 Leeds v Leicester (we lost 0-1) I remember the hype was for Martin O'Neill to be made manager but the crowd started chanting "O'Leary O'Leary" don't know why but it really made my goose bumps stand up was really over whelmed for the support for him.

I went to a Lostprophets gig afew years back and decided to take the other half. They were playing in Blackpool at the Winter Gardens so not far from my House. Anyway they were Pooh, with a capitol S. The gig was so loud my missus was sat with 2 fingers in her ears. Anyway we left after about 20 mins and then some years later it also turns out the lead singer gets nicked for being a kiddy fiddler of the worst kind. Bad experience.

Back in April, I had a weeks work in the Bergerac area of France for a couple I do some work for here, he`s English and she is French, I stayed with them and she served up oysters freshly bought in from Bordeaux, never had them before and wouldn`t rush to have them again, just didn`t get why they were both raving about them.

Same as.

I was at an oyster charity thing last year (charity was for a local cause, not the oysters  ).
We had a local Michelin star chef preparing the food. All I could see was lots of oysters hidden with really strong sauces/spices.
Just didn't get it.

If you like oysters, eat oysters. If you want the sauces and spices, stick them on something less expensive!
