Watched a programme just last night on Sky "The Museum Men" typical History Channel fayre, real life behind the scenes things with loads of set ups. It's about of a company who make replica item for museums, King Tut, The Apollo 11 moon lander and last night the Bell X-1.
Apparently he wasn't first choice but the chosen pilot demanded $150,000.00 so Yeager got the gig. The day before the flight he fell off a horse and broke ribs, fearing he would be pulled from the flight he told no one and rigged up a brush shaft to close the cockpit as it was too sore to stretch.
