The only “posh” train I’ve been on is the Northern Belle a couple of Christmas’s back. We really enjoyed our time onboard & were lucky to be surrounded by nice people. The food was excellent as was the service. Expensive but as a one off worth it.

During Lockdown there as been lots of series on TV regarding train journeys online including Chris Tarrants extreme railways, Michael Portillo (British, European and Asian), Tony Robinson (around the world by train) and the Bill Nighy railway journeys. We've watched lots of them and its really got us interested but so many options out there.

As for boats i think Jane Macdonald does some excellent cruise programmes been watching them also.

Can't wait to be able to travel again.

As for the train I offer the Trans Siberian (Moscow/Vladivostok) or Trans Mongolian (Moscow/Beijing). I did the regular Trans Mongolian 30 years ago - in January - and it was basic but there are luxury versions now.

Its really River Cruises we are looking at Sniffer but remember you reporting your trip on here and it does sound fantastic, certainly something to keep in mind.

A couple of the TV programmes (possibly Chris Tarrant or Tony Robinson) did the Trans Siberian certainly some interesting stops. One of them did it in reverse starting in Vladivostk which looks an amazing city.

All just ideas at the moment but one thing for sure we'll be doing something once we can.

A really memorable trip I've made a couple of times is taking the ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki in the summer. Drifting through the Stockholm archipeligo eating a wonderful seafood dinner takes some beating. The ships put tawdry P&O line to shame being very well appointed with comfortable cabins.Notable also were the Finns on the Special Brew at 8 AM as we docked in Helsinki. TBH it's a city of limited charms so one day is enough and moving on to St Petersburg, Tallinn, Kaliningrad or even Gdansk or Szczecin would prove rewarding.

Agree that Rhine cruising is enjoyable, but also consider the less high profile Moselle which is very picturesque. And of course the Danube passes through Belgrade, Bratislava, Budapest and Vienna - places with rich history and architecture.

SW if you go on a river cruise or a ocean cruise join http://www.cruisecritic.co.uk where like minded people organise excursions at a much better rate than the ships themselves. Usually on the first evening they have a get together giving you chance to meet others in the group. We’ve done several excursions with them & in the process saving a lot of money.
