Went to a cracking place in Selby too - I think it used to be the town hall or some kind of community building because it was an amazing place with really high ceilings and stunning interior décor.

I'm sure someone will tell me the name of that too :)
:D :D.

I think you’re referring to Jinnah, close to the Abbey. Tried it a couple of times, sounds daft this, but it’s a bit too big for me, I prefer the small, scruffy type curry settings personally.
No, I get that. Sometimes you just yearn for a booth clad in burgundy velour, don't you ?
:D.

We went to one in Bristol years ago, got rave reviews on all the local sites, the food was very good, but the place was massive, all very, very clean but it just didn’t feel right for a curry place to me.
Which on was that, BB? 4500 miles... by any chance? I've never been but my other half had a works Christmas party in there a few years ago.

I must admit I tend to make my own curries at the moment but I do love the old-fashioned ones with the flock wallpaper and the diddly-diddly music. Having said that, we went to a new one in Birmingham a couple of years ago that specialised in street food. We had to ask for recommendations as we didn't recognise any of the menu. Whatever we ended up with, and I can't remember what it was called, was absolutely delicious.

Am off to the local Indian for our last meal of the hols. From experience I've yet to find a curry house that matches the top two or three back home. Hoping to be proved wrong.

PS it will be a mild one tonight.

It was years ago mate, and I mean years, must be around 10/12 years at least, but I do remember it was in some sort of square, Mrs B seems to think there was some sort of water feature in the middle or something like that.

In Nottingham there is quite a sizeable Asian population so it's disappointing that we don't have a really stand out curry venue (although I'm intruiged to learn about NW's take away). Desi Downtown used to be excellent with its open kitchen and great atmosphere but the chefs changed and it went downhill.
In town

Men Saab Number one in the city for me.

Went once a long while ago. Enjoyed the food and atmosphere but at nearly £80 for two you're paying the premium of being on Maid Marian Way near the central hotels

4550 from Delhi way too noisy need the floors covered

Laguna Tandori every one raves about this one
Thanks, good suggestion, not tried it

Near us

Gurka Express
Cottage Balti Restaurant

We use Havelli all the time never had a bad meal from there.

Will check to see if any of these are on Deliveroo etc

MW's rule of curry restaurants is to look at the price of their onion bhaji.

It's a dish of onions made with chickpea flour and a few other ingredients, so something in the range £3.00 to £3.50 I think is acceptable.

In my previous post I mentioined the high prices at Mem Saab. The owners opened a new restaurant on our doorstep in a former NatWest bank called Masala Junction. Onion bhaji is £5.95 - ridiculously greedy!

Note to NW: we have Asian friends who took us to Anoki on Barker Gate. It was shortly before they married and the owners presented them with some gifts, so I've been reluctant to speak badly about it. But all the food is cooked in Derby and microwaved locally.

Just about every Thursday my wife makes curried beans, my favourite meal of the week.
Starts soaking a mix of dried kidney and pinto beans night before, boils them up soft till most of water has evaporated then adds a bit of oil.
Makes a curry sauce using chopped up onions, tomato, green peppers, red peppers and uses a medium strength Jamacian style curry powder, brand name of 'Badia'.
This is poured as a layer about 1 inch thick on top of the pan of beans and let the whole thing simmer for a while, flavour soaking into beans.
Fresh bread and butter, cold drink you're all set.
