Really ??

Bill Beaumont
Willie Carson
Matt Dawson (is it ??)
Cockney bowler fella, Phil Tuffnel is it ?
Was Gareth Edwards one once upon a time ?

That's only 7 - how can there have been 16 !?

You're correct with them (on my list anyway  ), it started with Cliff Morgan and Henry Cooper I'm certain of.
I have 14 names if all correct just two footballers short.

Others as I remember are Frankie Dettori, Ian Botham, Brendon Foster & John Parrott.

Correction I have 13.

Of the footballers one must have been early doors, 3rd & 4th on the list similar era to Emlyn Hughes ?

The other between or against Bill Beaumont & Willie Carson.
