Daily walk
Re: Daily walk
Hard to believe they are still standing after a millennium, especially with such shallow foundations Apparently before I moved to Antrin there was a wooden staircase up to the doorway and you could also climb to the top.

Those towers are ace.
Tenth century
That's just mindblowing.
You can't imagine anything being built today lasting half that, can you ?

Wow, would have been great to add to the 2 that can be climbed, but takes a lot of money to keep them accessible to visitors.Davycc wrote:Hard to believe they are still standing after a millennium, especially with such shallow foundations Apparently before I moved to Antrin there was a wooden staircase up to the doorway and you could also climb to the top.
Luckily, St. Canice's is a very active parish in the city. Lots of regular mass goers, bell ringing teams, classical concerts etc, so money is always coming in.
As an aside, St. Canice is where Kilkenny got it's name:
Irish = Cill Chainnigh (pronounced Kill Kyanig - there's a guttural role of the letter 'h', but not worth arguing about )
English = Church of Canice (Cainnech)
To Riggers point above, yeah, it's amazing what could be built so long ago.
Actually, St Canices Tower is 2 feet off plumb, but it hasn't fallen yet, so I think we're ok for a while

Re: Daily walk
Bit too early in the year for my really early morning walks, not unknown for me and the dog to be out in the countryside at 5.30am in the summer.NottinghamWhite wrote:Just back from my walk nice & early no one around at all, bliss.
