Love Mr Hathaway .. what a tragic waste of a life.
Speaking of which, here's another who died too young :

Great record that. It would seem that Mr Hathaway, from the bit I've read, had severe delusions of persecution amongst other mental states. As you say very sad that he deemed his thoughts to be that far wide of the mark to do what he did. R.I.P

Mate, I'm sorry to have to correct you but he wasn't delusional - he suffered mental health issues throughout his entire life before finally being diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic in the late 70s.
It wasn't him imagining stuff - he had an illness and was fine when he took the prescribed meds but as soon as he stopped or forgot, he lapsed into bouts of suicidal behaviour, one of which eventually took its toll.
It didn't help matters that he was not only black in a period of rabid racism but he was also a closeted gay.
Not only was that hard enough for anyone back then to deal with, but to have to deal with it in his own social circle where it was even more difficult to be accepted as a homosexual person of colour would be a nightmare for the most stable-minded individual.
Factor in his wife and kids (which was common up until very recently - one of my gay friends has been married twice and had kids with both women) and it was nigh on impossible ..
On a lighter note, here's my favourite song of his, the ever beautiful A Song For You :
