Eye test

Post by johnh »

See how you go with the following.

How many times does the letter F appear in the following.

FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE
SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTI
FIC STUDY COMBINED WITH
THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

A cryptic clue for the answer.

'In the 1950's song, the number of coins thrown into the Trevi fountain is the wrong answer. The fountain contains the correct answer.

Only we were only given five seconds to read it... ;)

Apparently, most people count three (three coins in the fountain). 'the fountain' is the Trevi of which the last two characters are the Roman numerals for number six.

I'm sorry, but you're all completely wrong: there's only one "f" in following :D

Ah yeah, VI, didn't spot that. On first skim reading it I only counted 3 but I was sure I must've missed some so went back over it. Shows how little attention you pay to little words like of, and how much the initial letter of a word dominates your perception of it. Those are the 3 Fs you spot immediately, because they are at the start of a group of letters.
It's like when I'm reading something quickly, I get annoyed if 2 character's names begin with the same letter, even if they're otherwise quite different names e.g. Shirley and Samantha. When I'm reading it quickly I see the capitalised S and my mind inserts a character's name and moves on without checking the rest of the word, so if both the characters are involved in something it gets quite confused.
