During the later stages of WW2 my Dad come of age and was given the job of taking the German prisoners of war to work on farms, apparently the soldiers were glad to go and no trouble at all (they got better fed and no intention to try escape just wanted to sit it out). However he said the Luftwaffe prisoners were all fanatical Nazi's and nothing but trouble so were never allowed out of the prison camp.

Hmmm .. I wonder if that was Goering's influence, or the fact they were likely from more affluent backgrounds and probably more connected to the more powerful people in society or simply because they'd lost friends who'd been shot down by the RAF ?

Can't answer that but another possibility could be the soldiers were conscripts rather than volunteers and just wanted to get through it.
