Match report to follow as soon as it's been written but to confirm a storming start to the season for Leeds Ladies FC, beating Tranmere Rovers away 5-3. Very pleased with the scoreline  just slightly annoyed with myself I couldn't attend!

Sounds like you missed an exciting match with a scoreline like that.

Be good if they can compete at top of their division. Who are the danger teams ?

Well Tranmere beat them 4-1 last season, so they might be one of them :D It's too early to say, obviously, plus i haven't seen other results but there are Hull City, Crewe Alexandra teams (so I'd suspect they have backing from the men's FL teams), plus teams from Blackburn, Chorley, Guiseley, Mossley Hill who might be not well-known which could mean they're proper 'dark horses' :D

TRANMERE ROVERS LFC 3, LEEDS LADIES FC 5

Leeds off to a flyer in thrilling Tranmere encounter

With such a successful weekend of sport for the city, the outcome of Leeds Ladies FC’s trip to Tranmere for the opening game of the season was almost written in the stars!

Leeds started brightly, dominating possession in the first few minutes and looking dangerous. After a concentrated period of pressure, a Megan Maxted throw-in to Harriet Jakeman who quickly passed to Arianne Parnham. She squared the ball to Hannah Poulter to clinically fire Leeds in to the lead. Tranmere 0 Leeds 1.

Tranmere’s response was swift and Leeds were caught out by a long ball which found their forward onside. Goalkeeper Harriet Coles, making her Leeds debut, came out to clear but the clearance deflected into the net for Tranmere’s fortunate equaliser. Tranmere 1 Leeds 1.

Leeds did not wilt and soon restored dominance. Jodie Hunter found Hannah Poulter in space. Poulter shot, the ‘keeper managed to parry but only to Arianne Parnham who struck a sweet shot from an acute angle to reclaim the lead. Tranmere 1 Leeds 2.

Leeds were not sitting back in this game and were seeking to increase their lead. Putting Tranmere under increased pressure Leeds were forward again. Hannah Poulter, Jasmine Saxton and Jodie Hunter showed some beautiful inter play and set up Arianne Parnham for her second goal. Parnham had found space on the edge of the area, unleashed a fierce left foot shot which curled around the Tranmere keeper and into the back of the net. Tranmere 1 Leeds 3

Leeds’ dominance continued after the restart and they kept their possession. With half an hour played, Jasmine Saxton showed excellent solo skill, collecting the ball 20 yards out, dribbling past the Tranmere defence and shooting accurately with her less favoured foot to beat the ‘keeper. Tranmere 1 Leeds 4.

Leeds kept the three goal lead for 10 minutes until, against the run of play, Tranmere caught them on the break and managed to score again. Tranmere 2 Leeds 4.

In the run up to half time Jasmine Saxton could have and probably should have extended Leeds’ lead, in front of goal with just the ‘keeper to beat. Her first shot was blocked and then her effort from the rebound was held. A fairly comfortable half for Leeds but two ‘soft’ goals spoiling the picture overall.

Half time Tranmere 2 Leeds 4.

A Leeds change at half time – Caroline Omboyi on for Martina Petrova.

Soon after the restart Tranmere were awarded a free-kick. Swung in high, ‘keeper Coles went for it but collided and land heavily and awkwardly on the ground while, the ball was headed into her net. Tranmere 3 Leeds 4.

Coles had recovered as Leeds restarted the match. Harriet Jakeman found an unmarked Jodie Hunter just outside of the Tranmere box, shooting just wide. The possession was quite even but Leeds looked much more dangerous with Arianne Parnham looking for her hat-trick and going close with a shot hitting the side netting. Leeds were awarded a free-kick following some dogged possession in midfield. Jodie Hunter stepped up to take it, around 35 yards out. With her sights firmly on goal, she flighted in a superb ball which dropped majestically into the net. Tranmere 3 Leeds 5.

A knock to Caroline Omboyi forced the Leeds management in to making a change. Sophie Hoyle replaced Caroline and the formation was altered to allow Jasmine Saxton to play a lone striker role supported by Harriet Jakeman. Both sides generally restricted each other to shots from distance and with the exception of a break from Tranmere which was cut out swiftly by Amy Perch, Harriet Coles remained untroubled.

With the game in the dying minutes, Amy Perch was replaced by Hannah Bowe. Leeds were working hard to quickly thwart Tranmere’s efforts in attack. They did this with great professionalism and, with plenty of added time due to the numerous injuries – of which Arianne Parnham was another addition – Leeds just needed to play out the final moments without conceding. The referee’s final whistle for full time ensured they succeeded in that to notch an impressive victory. An Olympian effort from all the team!

Head Coach Lewis Atkinson commented, “In the corresponding fixture last season we left Ellesmere Port somewhat disappointed as we lost 4-1 with a very poor performance. This year felt different. A new team, a new hope and new optimism. Tranmere are a difficult team to play, physical and direct, this was no easy game, physical and hard work.”

A great start to the season with pride and passion being displayed throughout by this newly revitalised Leeds team. Congratulations girls!

2-4 at half time, must have been some 45 minutes.

Great start looks like it could be a very good season for the Ladies.
