Leeds’ first away game for a few weeks and it was a short journey along the M62 to West Yorkshire neighbours and newly promoted Brighouse Town.

The tie was Leeds’ most physical game of the season so far with Brighouse strong and powerful and drawing tough tackling in return from the visitors. With the game just 80 seconds old the ever improving and talented Eden Pederson popped up to net a fantastic opener.

The goal was not though a sign of straightforward things to come, Brighouse were ‘stung’ into action and the shots were coming in as thick and fast as the tackles. Leeds’ ‘keeper Beth Davies made a series of superb saves but Brighouse capitalised on their period of domination to score a spectacular equaliser, Jodie Redgrave striking a stunning overhead kick flashed into the net, stinging Davies’ fingertips in the process.

Leeds struggled to recover from the goal while Brighouse were buoyed by it, powering into the penalty area only for Jodie Hunter to bring the forward down. Penalty kick. Struck powerfully and accurately towards the top right hand corner, Beth Davies waited until the absolute final moment before leaping to her right to push the ball over the bar. The finest of saves. This inspired Leeds to come back at Brighouse with Simona Petkova playing great balls forward for Caz Omboyi and getting back to defend when needed. Harriet Jakeman came close with a shot just wide of the post, followed shortly by a great turn and shot from Simona but again just wide. Tough tackling from Brighouse brought free kicks for Leeds, one taken by Eden Pedersen, crossing a high ball from the right which seemed to be eluding everyone until Jodie Hunter stretched to stab it home.

Nicola Hadley was substituted at half time, Jas Saxton coming on in her place.

Leeds were moving the ball around efficiently and on the 50th minute increased their lead. A good run and strike from Jakeman rebounded, causing a scramble in which Caz Omboyi succeeded with to net the third.

The manager made another change with Arianne Parnham making way for Demi Pringle. She made an impact straight away, injecting more pace into the forward set. The team was working together well, Simona industrious and collecting balls from midfield to send Caz and Demi forward to exert pressure on goal. Demi danced around defenders and somehow managed to stay on her feet despite heavy (attempted) tackles flying in. Brighouse were tiring and increasingly restricted to distance shots as they were no match for Leeds’ speed with the ball. Leeds however weren’t getting their own shots on target though Pringle came close several times. A great ball from Simona Petkova fell to Caz Omboyi, Caz turned and found Demi Pringle. Demi shot but it was just inches away from a fourth Leeds goal. Simona took her turn to shoot but hit the bar.

The score-line stayed 1-3. In short it was a good display from Leeds Ladies. Brighouse were an extremely physical team but Leeds excelled them for physicality. Very good performances from many girls but Player of the Match award goes to Bethan Davies in a goalkeeping master class, her penalty save was a fine example of her quality.

Well done Leeds Ladies, a fine result and a load of resilience and adaptability. #mot
