We've just booked up our main trip for this year - doing Toronto, Niagra Falls, Washington and Boston this time.

Nice trip did Toronto & Niagra Falls myself a few years back, Niagra is impressive (Mrs SW wants to go as she hasn't been so may be back one day). If you enjoy a nice walk Toronto Islands are worth a visit, the walk on ferry goes to a central point in Toronto from 3 points on the Island (best views of the City). You can get ferry to one end and spend best part of the day walking to the other.

Boston (also been once)- Nice and quite small so can walk around it, if you fancy a pint the origional "Cheers" Bar is next to Boston Common. A good day out if you get chance is to Salem, famous for the Witch trials (there is a regular boat each way from Boston).

Washington - Never been but have heard its well worth a visit.

Absolutely.
You can actually do this in shops too as the laws of the land state that the price is only an "invitation to treat" so prices aren't enforceable in any way.
Obviously don't waste your time trying to get 10p off a chocolate bar, but if you're spending over a ton on anything I would ask the question "Is that your best price ?" or "Is that the best you can do for me ?"
Usually you'll either get a little off for paying cash or you might get a free accessory if it's a TV or something bigger like that.

My car insurance has actually come in lower this year - I'm about to renew - but I'm still going to look around and see what I can get. It's only about £200 anyway, but the lower the better :)

Also, I just bought some new storage racks for my CD collection and as I wanted two of them I emailed the company and asked for a discount.
They were trading on eBay and were happy to give me a lower price so long as I paid direct via PayPal while avoiding the actual site itself, as it saves them on fees so it was a win-win for both of us :)
Spot on, I always price round for Utilities, Car insurance, Home insurance, boiler maintenance, etc.
Have changed companies in the 4 above at least once in last 3 years (utilities every year).

You’re not wrong Dave, I do it on almost all purchases.

I tend to have a target price, so if something is say £100, I’d set a target of £80, so put my first offer in at £60 allowing me room for manoeuvre. I’ve saved literally thousands over the years doing it.

With four kids and mortgages, I have never been in a position to 'waste money'. My main spending over the years has been to do with golf clubs. Those that you swing and those that you are a member of. I am fortunate to have a very good pension (going out of fashion unfortunately) but at 82, not a lot to spend it on. Car, 7 years old but only do 3,500 miles a year. House more or less sorted, just spent 5k+ on stair lift and hall, stairs, landing carpet. Might re-do the kitchen and am thinking of hiring a gardener. Apart from that, keep looking after the grandkids, (two at Uni). Like Davy, I enjoy a glass of wine but 'glass' in the singular. Very seldom have two glasses. Same with beer, one pint and that's it. Bit of a miser really but always 'stood my round',

Don't talk rot, John.
You don't have a miserly bone in your body.
You've just been there and done more things than most of us so you can enjoy spoiling the grandchildren :)

I'll second that, I know you're far from miserly and I know a few mutts that would thank you if they could speak

Cheers for that Selby, I'll add it to our notes for the trip.

I tried this recently. Item cost 280 quid. Target 250 quid, offered 225 quid. Received a letter from the DVLA saying that they wouldn't renew my road fund license and if I didn't pay the full amount they would consider legal action,
