Admit you can be wrong ?

Post by Selby White »

Ok couple of questions

1. Name any Leeds players we have signed that you were disappointed when you heard the news only to be proved wrong with the player having a big impact ?

2. Name any player whose signing delighted you at the time but ended up been a total disappointment ?

1. For me got to admit when we signed Vinnie no way would he be a "fit" at our Club, how wrong I was

2. Plenty to choose from but for me Tomas Brolin looked a world beater until we signed him

Couldn't believe we'd signed a finished Strachan ....but there you go

Brolin is probably the most famous failure and would normally go with him too but I'll throw in Mr Roque Jr

For the let-down, it has to be my favourite player as a kid, Mr Peter Barnes. What a waste of a career personified.

Honourable mention : Tommy Svindal Larsen, the Champ Manager legend who failed a trial with us in the early 90s.

Surprise success? I'd have to say Chris Whyte and Chris Fairclough. I don't think any of us, Sgt Wilko or the players themselves would guess they'd be a title-winning partnership at the back for any side...

1. Bobby Collins, thought he was over the hill, how wrong can you be! One of the best signings ever made by Leeds United.

2. Can't say I was delighted that he was signed as I had never heard of him. There were three Leeds managers between Raich Carter and the Don and I don't know which one it was. One of the three went on a scouting mission to Huddersfield Town. The left back named in the programme couldn't play for some reason and a young Ray Wilson deputised. He put in a 'man of the match' performance and the Leeds manager put in a bid for the name in the programme. He was duly signed and was absolutely hopeless.
I once played against Don Revie.

Played against Selby Town several times in the Yorkshire League. I remember they had Peter Swan's brother playing for them on one occasion. He was centre-forward. Peter Swan played centre-half for Sheffield Wednesday and was caught up in the betting scam and banned for life along with Tony Kay.

1, Paul Hart. I thought we approached Blackpool to sign Emlyn Hughes, but we came back with Paul Hart.
He impressed me the short time he was with us before moving on to greater things with Forest. Along with Trevor Cherry, Paul Hart held that team together. I cannot understand why he's only rated 80 in the list of all time greatest players.

2, John Charles. From being a God in both Leeds and Italy, it just didn't work out for him upon his return. As a schoolboy, I couldn't relate to his shortcomings, trying to play again in the English 2nd div.
