Season preview so far

Post by 1964white »

Twelve league/cup games into the current season with seven wins under our belts & on our best run since December 2009 I thought I'd pose a few questions on the campaign so far

1) At the time were you happy with Monk's appointment in the summer ?

2 Were you happy or unconvinced with Monk's signings up to the Fulham game in mid-August

3 Were you happy with the 4-4-2 formation/style of play Monk was playing

4) At what point do you feel our season turned around

5 Who has been our most influential signing

6 Monk's top 5 most important sighings

7 Who in your opinion has been the most disappointing signing, a player you expected to make a bigger impression

8 Our best player from last season's squad

9) Best young player out of the academy

10 Our most disappointing player from last season

11 Favourite goal

12 Best game so far

13 Favourite two players

14 Do you think we'll progress to the quarter-finals of the League Cup

15 Are you happy or still unconvinced with the current squad

16 Where do you expect us to finish now

1) At the time were you happy with Monk's appointment in the summer ?

Yes I was I think he's an excellent young manager.

It was always going to take time for all the new signings to gel.

3 Were you happy with the 4-4-2 formation/style of play Monk was playing

As I'm old fashioned I like the traditional formations

4) At what point do you feel our season turned around

Cardiff away

5 Who has been our most influential signing

Hernandez

6 Monk's top 5 most important sighings

Hernandez, Jansson, OKane, Roofe & Sacko

Rob Green, although saying that he's improving with every game.

1) At the time were you happy with Monk's appointment in the summer ?
Extremely.
I was very vocal in saying what a great appointment it was and how impressed I'd been listening to Colin Murray's interview with him for talkSPORT while he was still at Swansea. Very impressive individual indeed.

2 Were you happy or unconvinced with Monk's signings up to the Fulham game in mid-August
Not at all.
He just needed time .. it was virtually a new team, remember ?

3 Were you happy with the 4-4-2 formation/style of play Monk was playing
No, but that doesn't matter now - he's playing a more progressive 4231/451 formation. It's much more fluid and much more EPL.
Let's hope he sticks with it.

4) At what point do you feel our season turned around
When he was appointed, our entire CLUB was turned around .. we just needed to give him time and faith to do the job - and we still might if we have a wobble between now and the end of the season.

5 Who has been our most influential signing
Bartley.
I know everyone's gonna say Bridcutt, Jansson or Hernandez, but to go back to your previous club and cherry pick someone to carry the baton and do a job shows he trusts his own judgement. Bartley will have spoken to the rest of the squad and explained how he works, what he expects and furthermore he'd lead by example in doing just those things.
It was an inspired piece of man - and squad - management.

6 Monk's top 5 most important sighings
Bartley, Jansson, Green, Ayling and Bridcutt.
It shows he knew the defence was utterly useless and in bringing Bridcutt in permanently he bought some time - and faith - with the fans.

7 Who in your opinion has been the most disappointing signing, a player you expected to make a bigger impression
Roofe, but it's early days.
He'll come good, I'm sure. Ten goals for him this season, I reckon.

8 Our best player from last season's squad
Taylor, as ever.
He's our best player, full stop.

9) Best young player out of the academy
Other than Taylor ? Dent looks good on what we've seen so far ..

10 Our most disappointing player from last season
Murphy.
He must be a terrible trainer.
The bloke should be a senior pro for us - like a lower league Carrick - but instead he's wasting his career ..

11 Favourite goal
Bartley's header v Blackburn. I like goal-scoring centre-halves.

12 Best game so far
Cardiff.
Got the ball rolling and is always a great place to win, bettered only by Millwall, Chelsea or Man U.

13 Favourite two players
Bartley and Jansson.

14 Do you think we'll progress to the quarter-finals of the League Cup
No, I think we'll go out on pens or AET.
I don't mind though. I don't care about the cups, I just want to get out of this bloody division.

15 Are you happy or still unconvinced with the current squad
Happier than I can remember .. since coming down, anyway.

16 Where do you expect us to finish now
6th and in the play-offs

1) At the time were you happy with Monk's appointment in the summer ?
Yes. Young english manager with experience from PL. Better CV than previous managers.

2 Were you happy or unconvinced with Monk's signings up to the Fulham game in mid-August
Most new players looked promising, but there where still holes to fill.

3 Were you happy with the 4-4-2 formation/style of play Monk was playing
No. I've never really liked 4-4-2, it gives the opponents too much space at the midfield.

4) At what point do you feel our season turned around
When Monk decided to go for 4-2-3-1.

5 Who has been our most influential signing
Jansson first and Bartley second. Having centrebacks that is not useless turned the team around.

6 Monk's top 5 most important signings
Jansson, Bartley, Sacko, Hernandez, O'Kane

7 Who in your opinion has been the most disappointing signing, a player you expected to make a bigger impression
Grimes is in my opinion the only new player that shouldt be in the squad today. It doesnt look like he will add anything to the team. Roofe has not been really good yet, but he will be important in the future.

8 Our best player from last season's squad
Dallas. A lot of people don't rate him, but his work rate is extremely important to keep balance in the squad. Wood and Taylor (even tho Charlie hasnt been as solid as last year) are also very important.

9) Best young player out of the academy
Vieria have been brilliant so far and hopefully he will make us all forget about the loss of Cook. Phillips have also done well and I really like both Coyle and Denton.

10 Our most disappointing player from last season
Alex Mowatt. It kind of feels like he have everything thats needed for being class at this level, but he's just not good enough.

11 Favourite goal
Bartley against Blackburn.

12 Best game so far
Ipswich at home

13 Favourite two players
Jansson and Sacko

14 Do you think we'll progress to the quarter-finals of the League Cup
Yes

15 Are you happy or still unconvinced with the current squad
Very happy! Monk and Cellino have turned the squad aroundt and actually built an interesting squad with bot experienced players and very promising young prospects. The squad we have now (with maybe 1 or 2 additions) should be good enough to bring us back to PL within two seasons.

16 Where do you expect us to finish now
Somewhere between 4th and 8th. Let's say top 6!

1) At the time were you happy with Monk's appointment in the summer ?
Yes

2 Were you happy or unconvinced with Monk's signings up to the Fulham game in mid-August
OK, August is far too soon to make a decison

3 Were you happy with the 4-4-2 formation/style of play Monk was playing
As long as it works they can play 2-3-5 for all I care. This is has become phenomena since the Web where formations get looked at daily, posted on media sites, forums, Football Computer games and so on does anyone truly know what formation/style is played at every minute of the game the modern manager will evolve it through each game with players being able to fit a interchanging a few positions ? 'Discussions on '''The way we play'' seems to be more common these days to with many not having a clue what their on about.

4) At what point do you feel our season turned around
It's September it's hardly started.

5 Who has been our most influential signing
Bartley/

6 Monk's top 5 most important sighings
His own contract, Green good or bad the Goalkeeper is the most important in any squad, Bartley a relationship between a Keeper & Centre back is the basis of a successful squad, Roofe due to outlay, O'Kane,

7 Who in your opinion has been the most disappointing signing, a player you expected to make a bigger impression
Too soon IF they & Management ever get a chance to settle down then i'll judge.

8 Our best player from last season's squad
Woods if he has the security of a playing for the same manager for more than a month his goals will be crucial

9) Best young player out of the academy
Viera

10 Our most disappointing player from last season
Too soon

11 Favourite goal
All

12 Best game so far
Cardiff

13 Favourite two players
I'm Too old to have favourites amongst a group of young men, it feels wrong

14 Do you think we'll progress to the quarter-finals of the League Cup
Why not if Bradford can, anyone can

15 Are you happy or still unconvinced with the current squad
OK, But it's September

1. Yes, I was impressed with the job he did at Swansea and he got sacked off his first bad run.
2. Yes, I knew they'd take a while to gel and the best teams don't start playing well until October time.
3. I'm a traditionalist, so I always want 4-4-2, but it's obvious why no one uses it anymore.
4. Wood injury time goal v Fulham stopped the rot and changed Wood's confidence levels.
5. Hernandez, showing how important a quality 10 is in this league.
6. Hernandez, Jansson, Bridcutt, O'Kane, Sacko.
7. Roofe, but it will take him a while to settle/step up. Don't think he is worth £3m though.
8. Bridcutt is one of the best holding midfielders in the league and is a big signing.
9. Taylor.
10. Dallas hasn't played well so far.
11. Hernandez v Cardiff.
12. Always enjoy beating the Wendies.
13. Hernandez and Taylor.
14. Probably not as we will make changes and not play the strongest XI.
15. Happy, but maybe would have liked another striker if Wood stops scoring.
16. Top 6. No one has stood out so far, so why not? Provided we stay consistent and keep clean sheets.

1) At the time were you happy with Monk's appointment in the summer ?

No, I wanted Steve Evans to be given a chance. However, I did accept certain players (Hernandez, Bartley) would probably not have arrived.

2 Were you happy or unconvinced with Monk's signings up to the Fulham game in mid-August

I trust the managers judgment, and it was more significant for me who he got rid of. Bellusci, Wootton, Bamba, Sloth, Antenucci amongst others.

3 Were you happy with the 4-4-2 formation/style of play Monk was playing

I'm happy to go with the style the manager chooses, he shouldn't differ from his style.

4) At what point do you feel our season turned around

Chris Woods fantastic equaliser against Fulham.

5 Who has been our most influential signing

Jansson.

6 Monk's top 5 most important sighings

As mentioned, more important who he got rid of, but for the record Jansson and Bridcutt

7 Who in your opinion has been the most disappointing signing, a player you expected to make a bigger impression

Matt Grimes.

8 Our best player from last season's squad

Berardi

9) Best young player out of the academy

Vieira

10 Our most disappointing player from last season

Charlie Taylor

11 Favourite goal

Chris Wood v Fulham, turned our season.

12 Best game so far

Sheffield Wednesday away, fantastic atmosphere amongst the away fans.

13 Favourite two players

Berardi and Jansson.

14 Do you think we'll progress to the quarter-finals of the League Cup

Yes.

1) At the time were you happy with Monk's appointment in the summer?

To be honest undecided, did an ok job at Swansea then had a bad run. Young and promising but coaches don’t last long around here.

2 Were you happy or unconvinced with Monk's signings up to the Fulham game in mid-August?

You could see we had a better team than last season and Monk’s signings were an important part of that, they just needed time to gel.

3 Were you happy with the 4-4-2 formation/style of play Monk was playing?

Yes but only if you have the players who can do that kind of style, we obviously don’t.

4) At what point do you feel our season turned around?

I thought Fulham at home, last minute goal to gain a point but then we lost the next 2!!! So when Monk’s knew his job was on the line after the Huddersfield game.

5 Who has been our most influential signing?

Hernandez – we finally have a midfielder with the X-Factor and not the slow, knuckle draggers we have had in the past few season.

6 Monk's top 5 most important signings?

Hernandez, Bartley, Jansson, O’Kane & Bridcutt

7 Who in your opinion has been the most disappointing signing, a player you expected to make a bigger impression?

Roofe & Antonsson but I do think they are important to the team and will come good when required.

8 Our best player from last season's squad?

Wood – goal scoring king!!

9) Best young player out of the academy?

Taylor, Vieira & Phillips

10 Our most disappointing player from last season?

Any who aren’t in first team contention (there are a few).

11 Favourite goal?

Hernandez was a sweet strike but I’m going for Wood’s overhead kick.

12 Best game so far?

All our wins but because I got to see it, Cardiff away

13 Favourite two players?

Jansson & Wood

14 Do you think we'll progress to the quarter-finals of the League Cup?

Depends on what side Norwich put out, if they are not full strength then yes we can, they play the full team and it will be anyone’s guess.

15 Are you happy or still unconvinced with the current squad?

I’m happy and was happy at the start of the season it just has taken a time for the pieces to fall into place.

16 Where do you expect us to finish now

Top 6
7th to 12th
13th to 18th
19th to 24th

Still a couple of players away from making the play offs in my mind (even though I’m happy with the team we have), we will finish 8th.
Owners come and go but Leeds United will be there forever, for the fans - keep Marching on Together.
