I am having a similar discussion on another forum re Gary Barlow, advertised as "Gary Barlow on the front line" his much publicised & televised. Visit to Afghanistan, he will be nowhere near the front line, many of the troops will not get to see him as they will be providing security for him (at a much lower rate than his usual security) and if he was doing it for the troops then why televise it?
It seems that he'd go to the opening of an envelope for a fee

Just about everything a professional footballer does is for an audience, whether they like it or not. We complain when they forget that and do something wrong, but when Poleon does something awesome he's supposed to keep THAT to himself? It would be OK for the news to report if he got drunk and puked on the street (and you know it would be news), yes? But somehow it's not OK for him to share this on his own?

The sad fact is that no news outlet would cover a charitable act by one footballer, but they are delighted to share one footballers mistake. I'm glad these players can communicate with us directly over social media so we can get to know the good and the normal about them, and not just the bad and the football.

Gary Barlow has reached Super Celebrity status I reckon, and he has been even more heavily involved in Children In Need this year than before, he's one of the few major 'names' who seems accepted on both BBC and ITV so whilst I don't partic'ly like him, I think he knows he has more money already than he needs. Therefore, any charitable act he does is exactly that, for charitable cause. Good on him, though WHY we're even in Afghanistan is a totally different matter imho.
