Nasser Husain - Ex Leeds fan.

Post by +15 »

For the first 30 years of my life I was a Leeds fan but I switched to Arsenal because I couldn’t bear the thought of taking my kids to lower-division games.

The Western Terrace at Headingley still think I’m a Leeds fan and give me a cheer and I’m not going to tell them otherwise.

But they were never a fan, fan is short for fanatic; you never change you support; you support your club fanatically through thick and thin. They may have been a leeds follower or admirer, but never a fan. There are plenty of premier league club admirers who follow a popular club, don't attend or watch matches other than for some bragging rights. Should their flavour of the month be doing badly they will support another club, it doesn't make them a fan either.

Anyone who changes club loyalty is of questionable character IMO ;) . However, I looked 'fan' up as I don't really agree, Nic, with your comments above. I know it stems from fanatic but they're different definitions nowadays. It's similar with 'supporter' to me, I see a supporter who actually helps the club by paying to see them or paying to buy something from the club. It's all quite irrelevant really :P

noun
1.
an enthusiastic devotee, follower, or admirer of a sport, pastime, celebrity, etc.:
a baseball fan; a great fan of Charlie Chaplin.
Origin
1885-90, Americanism; short for fanatic

I always say I follow the club these days. (and that's from afar it has to be said) I'm not a fanatic, or I would stop going on holiday and buy a season ticket and spend all my money doing travelling to see them (I can't do both). Although there's no doubt in my mind that I support the club, has i'm forever defending it here in Lancashire against the harshest of critics. :D

In terms of a relationship I like to think of it has having an affair with occasional great sex. :shifty:
