Stat Attack - Best of the Best

Many of us have commented how our performances against lower teams have proved our Achiles heal this season.

But how do we compare against the big boys ?

Very good actually :D
If you do a mini table only taking into account the 10 matches when the Top Six play each other our performance is impressive.

1. Leeds - win 6 - draw 1- loss 3 - pts 19

2. Sheff Utd - win 5 - draw 2 - loss 3 - pts 17

3. WBA - win 4 - draw 2 - loss 4 - pts 14

4. Derby - win 4 - draw1 - loss 5 - pts 13

5. Norwich - win 3 - draw 3 - loss 4 - pts 12

6. Villa - win 2 - draw 3 - loss 5 - pts 9

And people are tipping Villa for the play offs

Lots of people say we have not been the same since boxing day, so if we just take the second half of the season

1. Sheff Utd - W3D2L0 - 11pts
2. Norwich - W2D2L1 - 8pts
3. Leeds - W2D1L2 - 7pts
4. Derby - W2D0L3 - 6pts
5. Villa - W1D2L2 - 5pts
6. WBA - W1D1L3 - 4pts

Whilst this isn't as good as taking the whole season, still says we performed better than the rest of the play-off teams.

The team to finish sixth in the Championship has won promotion via the play-offs in just one of the last 13 seasons - Blackpool in 2009-10.

The side to finish third in the second tier has won promotion through the play-offs (current format) on 11 occasions (37%), more than any other position.

We're Leeds United - we will buck the trend no doubt!

Havent got the stats to prove it but it does seem to be the team that are in form in the run in that goes up generally in the play offs - Obviously I could be wrong :D

Would love to know how many (or %) of the 4 play off teams each season that were at the top of the "current form" table ..say last 8 games of the season ended up getting promoted.

Form Table last 8 H&A (** 2018 is last 6 H&A as no last 8 in stats table)
2013 Crystal Palace (21st) Watford (13th) Brighton & Hove Albion (2nd), Leicester City (17th)
2014 Queens Park Rangers (12th) Derby County (1st) Wigan Athletic (14th), Brighton & Hove Albion (5th)
2015 Norwich City (2nd) Middlesbrough (10th) Brentford (8th), Ipswich Town (6th)
2016 Hull City (6th) Sheffield Wednesday (9th) Brighton & Hove Albion (2nd), Derby County (5th)
2017 Huddersfield Town (17th) Reading (3rd) Sheffield Wednesday (2nd), Fulham (1st)
2018** Fulham (3rd) Aston Villa (7th) Derby County (14th), Middlesbrough (2nd)

So the list above is winner, runner up, and losing semi finalist. Stats from https://www.soccerstats.com/ and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EFL_Champ ... _play-offs

So 2013 the most inform team of the playoffs Brighton lost the semifinal, 2014 the inform team Derby lost in the final, 2015 Norwich was the most inform of the play off teams won, 2016, Brighton the most inform of the play off teams lost the semi final, 2017 the top two inform teams lost semi finalists, and 2018 the most in form of the play off teams lost semi final

So of the 6 years that 1 champion, 1 runner up, and 4 lost at semi final stage. So the idea that the most inform team going into play-offs wins does not look like it's backed up by stats, indeed a third of the time it was the lowest inform ranked team that won!

So what's the form (last 8 H&A) going into this play off?

Villa (1st), Derby (3rd), WBA (10th), Leeds (14th)

So Leeds champions, Villa runner up and losing semifinalists of Derby and WBA is on the cards :D :D
