Surely a loan would be preferable in that case. Selling him seems a drastic step if there was an expectation that he would come good.

Marcelo Bielsa has admitted that Leeds United had high hopes for Clarke Oduor as he explained the club's decision to sell him to Barnsley.

Oduor was a key part of last season's all-conquering under-23s side and travelled with Bielsa's first-team squad on the pre-season tour of Australia before he was sold to Leeds' South Yorkshire rivals on deadline day.

During his time at Leeds United, Bielsa has looked to run with a streamlined squad, dipping into the under-23s when stretched, which has seen the likes of Leif Davis and Jamie Shackleton handed plenty of opportunities.

Oduor was one of the next batch of hopefuls to graduate from Carlos Corberan and was hoping to add to his one first-team appearance last season, but his future now lies away from Elland Road following a summer where Leeds have trimmed a series of fringe players from their squad.

But while Bielsa saw the potential in Oduor, the Whites head coach admitted that the 20-year-old had too many players in front of him in the pecking order.

"We had expectations for Clarke Oduor," Bielsa said on Monday. "He's a player who can play as a left-back, a number eight and as a winger too. At the same time in the same position he players in front of him: Douglas, Alioski, Davis, Harrison, Costa, Clarke.

"So he would be fighting with these players to play in two positions."

When Bielsa arrived at Leeds in June 2018, he made a point of pointing out that keeping players who would not play at the club did not sit right with him and he continues to practice what he preaches.

"The easier thing to be for me would be to keep the player here but if you do this it's because you are only thinking of yourself, because he has three players in front of him if you stop the opportunity to go out.

"When he had the opportunity he wanted to take advantage of the opportunity he had."

Oduor felt that the opportunity to follow Aapo Halme and Mallik Wilks in joining the Tykes from Leeds this summer was too good to turn down, with Bielsa appreciating that this is a quandary for the young players at the club.

"We have similar young players that are in the same situation like Oduor was before. But they prefer to continue here. Then these are similar situations but resolving in another way. But for us it is important for us to know what the desire is of the player."

Surely what he's describing here is exactly why you loan out a player? Too good to lose, not good enough to link up with the first team squad, yet.

I am really glad that this Transfer Window has closed.

As ever though you get the feeling that fans are being taken for mugs.

Come on guys our squad which no one will argue needed improving quality wise in some areas was far too big to sustain. Wages may have been relatively small but they all add up.

And loaning a player out gets him off the books, gives him the chance to improve and play first team football. Plus given we've let 25+ players go this summer already, I'm not sure it was essential to lose one more, especially since he's probably on twelve quid a week.

Not whinging, the rationale just seems a little odd to me.

Barnsley wanted a left back failed to get our 6th choice as he choose Wigan so decided to buy our 7th choice, no big deal.

Douglas, Alioski, Davies, Berardi & Dallas would all have been picked ahead of either of them.

Can't blame the lad for moving its a great opportunity for him but can't blame the club its one position we have a surplus of players that can do a job.

We all support MB and know he likes working with a small close knit squad and we have between 20 & 25 players we will use this season, so really can't see an issue with losing a player that would not play for us.

Yes he may or may not come good, that's a risk and decision management takes. I'll put money on significantly fewer of former youth team players that are moved on cheaply don't progress to play at a higher level than where we are now.
