The Big Picture - Another 10 games

Post by Selby White »

As promised following on from the thread earlier in the season looking at the big picture based on every 10 matches rather than look at each match individually with the highs & lows.

http://www.lufctalk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5895

Well in the first 10 games as you see in the previous thread our record read :-

Won 6, drawn 2, lost 2, goals scored 14, conceded 5, points 20.

Think we all agreed averaging 2points per match would arguably see us promoted.
We also agreed conceding on 5 goals in that period was superb but we all felt we needed to score more.

Well this period we've done even better, must all be smiling at that.

Won - 7
Drawn -2
Lost - 1
Scored - 16
Conceded - 5
Points - 23

Amazing statistics but still a little light on the goals scored, think we should be averaging 2 per game not 1.6.
5 conceded again can only say fantastic.

We lost at Millwall our only defeat (and the only time we've conceded two in a match) but that was all down to a bad referee decision with the penalty and us ending up with 10 men. That really could have been another 3 points but thats football i suppose.

Think these 10 matches have really seen the league open up and its clear to me that along with ourselves West Brom & Fulham are the strong teams and really do think the two promoted teams will come from them. Still plenty of dangerous teams but for me they are chasing play off spots.

For the record after 20 games last season we had 40pts so 3 pts better. However it was this 3rd period we started our blip so we really could be approaching an important period.

So onto the next 10, can we add another 20 pts ?
Hull - Home
Cardiff - Home
Fulham - Away
Preston - Home
Birmingham - Away
West Brom - Away
Sheff Wed - Home
QPR - Away
Millwall - Home
Wigan - Home

Its clear we have two big away games in this batch would be more than happy sharing the points in them. Against that we have 6 home games in the 10 so that could be to our advantage (I hope)

My predictions -
win - 6
draw - 3
loss - 1
score - 20
concede - 8
points - 21

I daren't predict, I honestly see banana skins with every one of those matches, least of all Wigan TBF but we all know what happened last season :D If we DON'T lose at Fulham and WBA then I will be delighted (knowing us we will beat West Brom and be the only team to do so all season, and twice ;) )

We football fans are usually described as eternal optimists but I think last season has turned us on here into eternal pessimists.

Bookies, on the other hand, don’t deal in emotions like optimism and pessimism - just hard cold analysis.

This morning Paddy Power had us 1/12 to be promoted. We are now 1/16.

I try to be realistic :D I do think we'll get promoted but there will be bumps in the road on the way and these games listed are all potentially hazardous. Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me if we bloomin' well won them all

I'm looking forward to when we actually start playing to a level we all know the players can reach, I get the feeling there's plenty left in the ability tank ;)

I’m with ANS on this next batch of 10 games. To me these look a lot tougher than our last 10. The pessimist in me is just waiting for the wheels to come off this pole position bus :shifty: .

We have been more consistent, we have defended much better and we have squeezed wins where one or no points were distinct possibilities and these are all real improvements that are really important to be winners.

My predictions are;

Hull - Home - Win
Cardiff - Home - Draw
Fulham - Away - Draw
Preston - Home - Win
Birmingham - Away - Draw
West Brom - Away - Lose
Sheff Wed - Home - Win
QPR - Away - Lose
Millwall - Home - Win
Wigan - Home - Win

I really hope that we do better and hold our 2 point average per game, but that fixture list is tough and Christmas has never been our strong time of year.

Well done SW again for following through with this thread. One correction on your top post is that we are actually 4 points ahead of last year at the same time. Nic pointed this out on another thread last evening - and our GD is better by 4.

Hi Dunboyne White, I’m surprised Davycc hasn’t been after you to register on the members map! We need more Leeds fans registered in Ireland and there’s none in Meath to date. Good to have you posting, and that’s from a Rebel!
