I was there that day. Went on the pitch to save getting crushed as angry fans surged down the Gelderd End.

Question - was Astle also offside from the pass inside the box?

Owners come and go but Leeds United will be there forever, for the fans - keep Marching on Together.

Trouble is the linesman was probably still near the half way line with his flag up.Mr Russell wrote:From what I heard YES!isrodger wrote:Question - was Astle also offside from the pass inside the box?
Remember that day and it wasn't just a one off decision there was a string of bad decisions against Leeds that day, this just kicked it off.

Did the Midlands team give us a goal from the restart to make it fair?

Re: 49 years ago today
There was a very heated debated on here a few years ago due to a former poster claiming that West Brom's goal was perfectly legitimate. I can't remember who it was but normally he was okay but when it came to this specific matter, he got aggressive and confrontational. No doubt he got it back but it wasn't a pleasant situation. For me there were certainly two offsides which the ref did not give. Anyway, a few years back I was at a West Brom do in Birmingham Town Hall, helping to raise funds for the 'Three Degrees' statue of Laurie, Cyrille & Brendon. Frank Skinner hosted the event which was a basic Q & A with a few famous WBA players of the past. John Wile was on stage and somehow the chat got on to that Leeds v WBA match, which JW played in. He said, words to the effect of, 'We ALL knew it was offside, the ref was the only one claiming different.'

I've said it many times and anyone on here that was at that game will tell you the same it wasn't the only bad decision that day. Leeds were continually flagged offside leading up to the goal.
That was the decision that was the last straw and an already angry crowd reacted as one.
I can understand younger members saying he wasn't intefering with play for the initial offside however the rules were different back then.
Others say play to the whistle but it was so far offside both teams initially stopped.
As ANS points out even West Brom players accept it was offside.

Did the ref ever come out with an explanation as to why he over ruled the linesman and allow play to continue
