Elland Road's altered capacity revealed as Premier League clubs eye crowd returns

Elland Road could see its capacity altered if Leeds United are promoted as Premier League clubs eye the return of crowds to stadiums at the beginning of the 2020-21 season.

Premier League clubs are pushing for stadiums to be at 40 per cent capacity for the start of the 2020-21 season, as they continue to try and get supporters back amid the COVID-19 crisis.

A report in The Independent also states face masks could become mandatory for match-goers, with electronic ticketing set to be introduced to aid the track and trace system.

The latest mooted plans could lead to seeing crowds back at close to half capacity, with top tier clubs working closely with the government.

The return of fans to football stadia is seen as crucial for teams in the lower leagues, who rely so heavily on matchday income to function.

According to the report, the current plans involve at least a seat between each person, with discussions revolving around fans sitting behind each other, rather than diagonally, which would pose a greater risk of catching the virus.

However, there are some logistical issues to be worked out, with clubs with older stadiums likely to find it more difficult to implement social distancing measures, with seats more tightly packed together.

Elland Road currently has room for 37,890 supporters – under the proposed new 40 per cent rule, Leeds United could see approximately 15,156 spectators pass through the turnstiles.

The 2020/21 Premier League campaign is expected to start on September 12, in line with UEFA’s European calendar.

We’ve touched on this on another thread, please let this be true.

I understand it would be season ticket holders only, with each chosen at random for the different games. Electronic ticketing wouldn’t apply, as we would just use our cards as normal, with ST holders easily traceable.

Not perfect, but I’d take anything to be honest.

I think we have around 22k season ticket holders (please advise if Im far out on this) there must be a decent proportion of those in family groups of 2+, it would take a bit of work by someone but might it just be possible to get all the season ticket holders into the ground with distancing given that there will be family groups who could sit together with no distancing between themselves but with distancing to the next group/person

Don't know if anyone saw the interview with the Scunthorpe manager and he thinks if this isn't allowed a lot of lower division clubs (including themselves) will struggle to survive. He was totally in favour of a restricted crowd and made the point it would should be home supporters only with season ticket holders given priority. He had done models of their stadium to present and see how many they could get in their ground and was aiming between 2,000 & 3,500 (capacity was around 10,000).

Don't think anyone could argue season ticket holders should get priority, I'm currently not one(hope to be again one day soon) but have been for over 20 years back in the day and would have been aggrieved if that had not been the case.

Ziggy makes a good point about family groups, perhaps one stand should be dedicated for these groups would make the logistics easier.

Obviously all season ticket holders wouldn't be able to get their own seat and the only issue i think would be when a club has more STH than they can safely house.

So are they planning for away supporters to attend or home fans only?

Home fans only makes sense from limiting travel point of view but would it make home games even better for the home teams?

At this point there should be no away fans included in the crowd. Start slow with home fans then have more.

Football will be different till their is a vaccine and that could (should) be at least 12 months, sadly.
Owners come and go but Leeds United will be there forever, for the fans - keep Marching on Together.

Correct, around 22k season ticket holders (might be slightly more).

The lads and lasses I go to games with are a mixture of single ST holders and groups, with all the information the club have on us, it shouldn’t be too difficult to put Man & Wife, Man & Son or whatever combination together. There was talk of different times of entrance to stop everyone turning up on mass, which is currently usually the case around 2.50pm and presumably something similar afterwards.

Some fag packet maths

22,000 season ticket holders, and distancing of 1 empty seat (although given how tight soem some seats are that may not be enough)
Say, 10,000 are single and therefore with distancing require 2 seats = 20,000 seats
of the remaining 12,000 lets say 6,000 are in family pairs, they would require 3 seats per 2 people = 9,000 seats
assume then the remaining 6,000 are in family groups of 3 that require 4 seats per the 3 people = 8,000 seats
Total seats = 37,000 vs capacity 37,890 = job done

What happens to distancing when we score is another matter

Seems to work but a little concerned that you are suggesting the seats are one metre wide (the recommended distance),

Thats the flaw........ I worked it backwards from the capacity to get the answer I wanted, perhaps not the most sophisticated method :D
