The state of ER's pitch

Post by Leicester White »

We've played some of our most beautiful football on beautiful surfaces - the Hawthorns, Anfield, etc. Just wondering how much the state of our pitch which didn't get relaid on the break is going to affect our points tally. I suspect it'll be the difference between top half and bottom half which is gutting having backed Top 10 at 5-2 pre-season!!! Anyone else think it's going to be a factor? And any experts out there know whether we could put down fresh turf in an international break or does it need longer to settle?

Doesn't look that bad to me, won our last two on it.

Just digressing, but I played on the ER pitch in the early 1960's at the end of the season. The Don asked Yorkshire Amateur to put out a team on a Wednesday evening to play a Leeds United team so that the Don could decide which Leeds players to keep and which to let go. I was playing centre forward at the time and the Leeds centre-half that evening was Paul Reaney. (Good call by the Don to keep him!). Anyway, the ER pitch was rolled soil. The only grass was little patches out by the corner flags. That's how all pitches ended up in those days.
There may be better pitches than ER but ER is like a bowling green compared to the good/bad old days.
I once played against Don Revie.

It didn’t look good did it, various shades of green and yellow.

The weather hasn’t been great, of course, and I’m sure I saw somewhere Angus Kinnear commenting on it but can’t find anything now.

So we will have a brand new pitch for our next game. Great move by the club in the current climate!

£300k well spent, I'd say, given how badly we've played on this terrible pitch. Plan is still to fully upgrade the drainage and underpitch heating etc in the summer in a full upgrade, so this is quite a brave move from the club.
