Also on that date but in 1978 I was at Wembley to see ITFC beat Arsenal in the F.A. Cup Final.

Thirdly, on 6th May 1981 I was at Portman Road to see ITFC beat AZ Alkmaar 3-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Final, a completion that we won after a nervy game in Amsterdam two weeks later.
 Ipswich had a great team & manager in the 70's / early 80's

dont remember Roger Osborne doing much else in his career but he must be a legend at Ipswich (Beattie,Lambert,Hunter, Mills, Whymark, Geddis, Cooper, Muhren etc) even a slimline Alan Brazil early 80's?... :D

Roger does have one more claim to ITFC fame because he man marked Johan Cruyff out of the game in a 3-0 home win against Barcelona in the UEFA Cup in 1977/78 but we lost 0-3 away and went out on penalties.

Today is my 85th 6th of May but, sadly, I don't remember anything about any of them.
I once played against Don Revie.

My first visit to Portman Road was 1970-71 I think  we won 4-2. Coming from North Yorkshire Ipswich seemed a hell of a long way in my mates Ford Escort van sat in the back with a couple of other lads. Johnny Giles scored a penalty & Billy was also on the score sheet.

I made my second visit to Elland Road that season for a 0-0 draw. Laurie Sivell had a marvellous game in goal that day, he was only 5 foot 8 ins I think but very agile and very brave.

My first visit to Elland Road was the season before and Leeds won 4-0, I seem to remember it being very wet that day.

I am not sure exactly how many times I have been to your place but probably between 12 and 15 times I think, always with ITFC.

Ipswich were a very good side in those days.

The young Kevin Beattie was something else before the injuries took their toll. I remember Sir Bobby Robson being interviewed once and he was asked who was the best player he ever managed. He umm and ahhed and then said "I kind decide, it's either (the Brazilian) Ronaldo or Kevin Beattie.

Makes you think really when you consider who must have Robson managed in England, Spain and Holland, and in international football.

I loved the great Kevin Beattie. I always tell anyone that will listen that he is/was the most complete footballer that I ever saw because he could do everything(except maybe play in goal) but you really had to see him play to understand just how good he was.

Behind me on my wall at this moment I have a framed photo from an ITFC fans thing commemorating the 30th anniversary of us winning the cup and on that photo is Mick Mills, John Wark, my son, myself, Kevin Beattie (RIP) and Roger Osborne along with the F.A. Cup and The Beat has got his arm on my shoulder. That is truly one of my prize possessions.

The guy I played golf and snooker with was born in Esh Winning, County Durham. He moved south with his family when he was about 12. A relative of his (can't remember but could have been a sister) married Bobby Robson. Bobby Robson used to send tickets to him for all Ipswich home games and even provided all his football kit (boots etc., - he played for Slough Town). He still supports Ipswich to this day, though their best days seem to be behind them.

I have a photo of myself, my wife, a well known Talk member, Gary Edwards ( Mr Paint It White ) & Jim Lister who was The Dons coach driver for several years. Also on the photo are all the members of the FA Cup winning side of 1972 ( surviving members including Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter & Paul Madeley) & the FA Cup. This is indeed a prized possession of mine. The photo was taken in 2012 ( 40 years after that famous day )
