Ipswich were a very good side in those days.

The young Kevin Beattie was something else before the injuries took their toll. I remember Sir Bobby Robson being interviewed once and he was asked who was the best player he ever managed. He umm and ahhed and then said "I kind decide, it's either (the Brazilian) Ronaldo or Kevin Beattie.

Makes you think really when you consider who must have Robson managed in England, Spain and Holland, and in international football.
I loved the great Kevin Beattie. I always tell anyone that will listen that he is/was the most complete footballer that I ever saw because he could do everything(except maybe play in goal) but you really had to see him play to understand just how good he was.

Behind me on my wall at this moment I have a framed photo from an ITFC fans thing commemorating the 30th anniversary of us winning the cup and on that photo is Mick Mills, John Wark, my son, myself, Kevin Beattie (RIP) and Roger Osborne along with the F.A. Cup and The Beat has got his arm on my shoulder. That is truly one of my prize possessions.
That's fantastic, Paul. That photo must be treasured.

Re: Kevin Beattie. Yes, he had it all when he first came through: fast; strong; rock hard; great in the air; a tremendous tackler. He had a lovely left foot too. The injuries really did him in though.

I saw Beattie play at Elland Road once when I was a kid and he hit Allan Clarke (I think) with the hardest tackle I've ever seen. Frightening it was.

Beattie was still young and this was a Leeds side with the likes of Hunter, Bremner and Yorath in the team and nobody went near him all afternoon.

Yeah, people are going crazy about it on the ITFC Forum that I use but I am much more of a 1960's music person so I am not getting over-excited about it.

I made my second visit to Elland Road that season for a 0-0 draw. Laurie Sivell had a marvellous game in goal that day, he was only 5 foot 8 ins I think but very agile and very brave.

My first visit to Elland Road was the season before and Leeds won 4-0, I seem to remember it being very wet that day.

I am not sure exactly how many times I have been to your place but probably between 12 and 15 times I think, always with ITFC.
What was it with Ipswich and short keepers? How tall was Paul Cooper? Used to play in goal for my junior school team because I was the tallest (hated it as wanted to be more regularly involved in play) ... distinctly remember a long feature on Paul Cooper on Football Focus and how he saved so many penalties.

I know that one of his songs is about a castle but that is all I know, except that he is local to Suffolk and is famous.

Going crazy because they think it is better than good, he is famous after all.

We have just acquired new owners, three American blokes that seem to collect football clubs world wide and people are getting excited about that too but not me.

Paul Cooper was 5 foot 11 so certainly not tall for a keeper-he actually made his debut for us at Elland Road in your last home game of the 1973/74 title winning season.

He did get a reputation for saving penalties.

I was at Wembley with several mates for the 1972 Cup Final and what a great day it was. I still have the programme (and the one for the semi-final which I also went to). I occasionally check on eBay to see if these programmes have at last made me my fortune but, alas, I'm still waiting because both can be had for under a tenner.
