Research help please

Post by Another Northern Soul »

Leeds were in Europe in the 1960s, Les Cocker was with the club at the time.

An away game, the weather had been appalling and so the home team had hired a helicopter to blow water off the pitch.

The writer was unreliably informed it was in Belgium but no info is around about Standard Liege and helicopters. I did think it would be Anderlecht but we played them in 1975 and Les wasn't with Leeds by then.

Anyone help?

I was at the home game against them but I’ll admit I couldn’t remember the score so just checked & it was 1-0 a Giles penalty. On the subject of of the ICFC some of the teams we played what happened to them .

SC Leipzig
Bologna
Ujpest Dozsa ( in 1969 Newcastle beat this team in the final and was the last silverware the Geordies won )
Dinamo Zagreb
Spora Luxembourg
Partizan Belgrade

Posting those have sparked some nostalgia in me old head :D Our geography teacher used to base his lesson on the teams cities and countries when we played against them.

I'm the same about the geography lesson - be it cricket or many other sports - I know so many places because of sport - And can recall many of those names/teams you mentioned above - Is SC Leipzig now effectively RB Leipzig

I think sport has given us all geography lessons at one time or another particularly pre t’internet where school libraries held all the answers the young minds needed answering, much more satisfying than using Google for me .

Thought it might be a Scottish team with the helicopter but then realised is would be two Jock's with a brush.
I once played against Don Revie.

The original question is for research towards the biography of Les Cocker. Did you ever play against him, John, or cross paths with him?

The helicopter ploy worked, BTW, and we won 1 - 0 :D
