Members Questions

Post by Selby White »

Following a discussion in the Mods staff room we think the members interview section is something that's missed on the forum, always a decent read.

We will put up 10 questions for anyone to answer (plus tell us why) and if it proves popular it can be done periodically with possibly different members setting the question.

I'll get us going with 10 for now, hope a few of you will have a go :-

1. What is your most memorable Leeds Utd match?

2. Tell us about any funny or strange incident that has happened to you at a match.

3. Who was your first ever favourite player?

4. Who is your current favourite player?

5. What is your favourite restaurant/food type?

6. What hobbies/pastimes do you share with your partner?

7. What is your favourite holiday destination and why?

8. If you got chance to see any deceased musician who would it be?

9. If you were just leaving school again with your adult knowledge what career path would you like to follow?

10. If you won a large sum of money to give to any single Charity which would you choose?

Thanks in advance to those who have a go

Good idea this

1. What is your most memorable Leeds Utd match?
Sunderland FA cup final - only a wean at the time but it made me cry and I started to realise how much Leeds meant to me

2. Tell us about any funny or strange incident that has happened to you at a match.
Going to a local Irish league match between Linfield and Glentoran and I inadvertently went into the wrong end wearing a Glens top and 3 scarves! Needless to say I panicked but one of the Linfield 'higher-ups' in their 'hooligan element' put his arm around me and escorted me to the Glentoran section. We got a standing ovation from all round the ground.

3. Who was your first ever favourite player?
Probably Geordie Best - I didn't distinguish between Leeds and Man Utd then

4. Who is your current favourite player?
Pontus, obviously :)

5. What is your favourite restaurant/food type?
Chinese. I love any spicy food

6. What hobbies/pastimes do you share with your partner?
None nowadays I'm sorry to say, except the kids and grandson

7. What is your favourite holiday destination and why?
Cyprus. Based there a in the army and have been back on holiday several times.

8. If you got chance to see any deceased musician who would it be?
Elvis. The King

9. If you were just leaving school again with your adult knowledge what career path would you like to follow?
I don't think I'd really change. I've always liked the variety I've experienced by changing jobs

10. If you won a large sum of money to give to any single Charity which would you choose?

Yes good thread

1. What is your most memorable Leeds Utd match?
I have many "favourite "moments, Yeboahs goals, Rod Wallace v Spurs, but it's a toss up between Bristol Rover promotion game and v Liverpool "the Viduka show. Have to go for the Liverpool game as I was watching it in a pub with mostly Liverpool supporters. That photo of Viduka with his arms raised and the scoreboard in the background still makes me smile.

2. Tell us about any funny or strange incident that has happened to you at a match.
See a woman in the row in front trip on her way back to her seat and hitting a guy in front of her with a burger plastered in ketchup, was so slapstick.

3. Who was your first ever favourite player?
As said George Best, we didn't have a lot to cheer about and he was just a great player who happened to play for the wrong team. Leeds Billy Bremner

4. Who is your current favourite player?
Mr Messi such a joy to watch, shame time is running out. I'm with BB, Berardi just give 100% and does whats needed.

5. What is your favourite restaurant/food type?
Indian but best ever meal was in a really small Nepalese restaurant in Glasgow, absolutely amazing.

6. What hobbies/pastimes do you share with your partner?
Hmm bar the obvious nothing really we are like chalk and cheese. I suppose a glass of wine and a film.

7. What is your favourite holiday destination and why?
Spain away from the coast. People are friendly, I can try out my Spanish and everything is sooo much cheaper than in the resorts. Also from home to finca in a few hours hate long flights.

8. If you got chance to see any deceased musician who would it be?
Frank Sinatra

9. If you were just leaving school again with your adult knowledge what career path would you like to follow?
veterinary surgeon

10. If you won a large sum of money to give to any single Charity which would you choose?
Cancer Research

We've been to Nepal twice we loved it, even took a flight over Everest absolutely breathtaking. We were staying 3 days outside Pokhara in a really nice small hotel. Our meals were on a long table in the garden, we arrived the first day at lunchtime & we were served this beautiful Nepalese meal. Anyway in the evening we sat down once again to find they were catering for our British tastes & Buffalo cottage pie was the main meal. The next 2 lunches returned to the stunning Nepalese cuisine but the evenings were Buffalo & mushroom pie & Buffalo steak. We waiting one day for an internal flight one day & I was sat outside with Sue having a smoke when 2 young men approached us to tell us proudly that they were on their way to England to become Gurkhas, they were so proud of this.

1. What is your most memorable Leeds Utd match?

In matches that I have been in the ground to I have to 2 favourites both in the 1989/90 season, Hull at home where we won 4-3 with Strachan getting that last minute winner and the final game of the season down at Bournemouth where we won 1-0 to be champions and back up to the old division one. Seen live on TV then there are also 2, Viduka’s 4 against Liverpool in the 2000/01 season and the Bristol Rovers promotion match in 2009/10 season.

2. Tell us about any funny or strange incident that has happened to you at a match.

2 again but both not involving Leeds games, here in the A League (Australia) me and 2 mates went to see Newcastle Jets play up in the Gold Coast and we were in fancy dress and had long black wigs, well the put the camera on one of my mates and the commentators said “my god that is the ugliest thing I have ever seen at a ground” (we got phone calls from friends telling us this fact), laughter ensued. Second, are there any neighbour’s fans around? Well I was down for a Jets vs Melbourne Victory and Deebo was with us for this one and we had a celebrity as Dr Karl Kennedy was in the away end with us cheering for my team, he kept telling us not to get the Camera on him as his wife did not know he was there, too late doctor!!!!

3. Who was your first ever favourite player?

2 no just kidding 4 players I really liked, Tony Currie for Leeds and for the Netherlands I was a big fan of Cruyff, Neeskens and Rep.

4. Who is your current favourite player?

For Leeds I’m picking our Kiwi brother in Chris Wood but I have to give raps to Jansson and Bartley.

5. What is your favourite restaurant/food type?

I love Asian food but modern Australian is excellent.

6. What hobbies/pastimes do you share with your partner?

My partner loves going to nice places to eat and we have been to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane many times to sample the best restaurants in those cities, my part is I like to try all the Breweries in those places so we combine them both when we go away. Luckily she does like football so sometimes we get all 3 in at once.

7. What is your favourite holiday destination and why?

I already live in the best place to visit, I have no need to go anywhere else!

8. If you got chance to see any deceased musician who would it be?

Oh good one, probably David Bowie in his prime would be the first name I could think of, other mentions to Ian Curtis (Joy Division) who I base all my dance moves off, Freddie Mercury (Queen) his showmanship would have been fun to see live & Michael Hutchings (INXS) probably the best and well known of the Aussie Bands although AC/DC (Bon Scott) might have a claim to that award as well.

9. If you were just leaving school again with your adult knowledge what career path would you like to follow?

Probably no different but I might have concentrated more on schooling and not wanting to play football or cricket all the time.

10. If you won a large sum of money to give to any single Charity which would you choose?

WWF or the RSPCA, basically anything to do with animals.

1. Most memorable match? The penultimate match of promotion season when we just had to win, Leicester at home when Strachan popped up on 85 minutes with a beauty and John Helm said "Have you ever seen a better goal" also the 5th Round Cup match v QPR in 1987, again a late winner this time from Brendan Ormsby, those were the days when I never missed a game.

2.A funny or strange incident at a match? Bizarrely my car broke down 2 years in a row in the 3rd round of the F A Cup, away at West Brom's ground v Telford I had to go back on the Monday to get my car after work. The following year it was at Elland Rd and had joined the AA by this time. 2 or 3 years after this, again on a cup night v Oxford, my car got nicked, had to ring my uncle to get us home.

3. Who was your first ever favourite player? Alan Clarke, Peter Lorimer and Duncan McKenzie. I was a striker myself, played all day long all week long, I just loved scoring goals like my Leeds heroes

4. Who is your current favourite player? I have to say I've been really impressed with young Ronaldo Vieira and he's becoming my favourite at the moment along with Luke Ayling, who's been very consistent since arriving.

5. What is your favourite restaurant / food type? Italian

6. What hobbies / pastimes do you share with your partner? We like to eat out and like visiting different towns and cities together

7. Favourite holiday destination and why? I'm not really into travelling, I've been to a few countries don't have a standout, maybe Kenya for the fact that it brought home to me how happy people can be who have nothing

8. If you got a chance to see any deceased musician who would it be? Either John or George from The Beatles, they will always be my favourites from the pleasure they've given me since I was a kid of 5 or 6

9. If you were leaving school again with your adult knowledge what career path would you like to follow? I would do what I do now but sooner. I only became a full time jock and quiz presenter 10 yrs ago and I'm now 52. I should have had the confidence to pack my job in instead of working for a company for 23 years.

10. If you won a large sum of money to give to any single charity which would you choose? Cancer Research

1. What is your most memorable Leeds Utd match?
Saints 3-4 Leeds.
I took my then-gf and her daughter and it was the latter's first ever live match. She was giggling at me throughout the first hour, but as we began to take control and eventually turn the screw, she got upset but not because Southampton were losing (she's a Gooner, like her mum) but because this big, hairy oik behind us was spitting as he unleashed his rage on the home team as their entire team began to fall apart before our very eyes. She was wearing a hoodie and finished the game with it over her head, despite it being quite warm

2. Tell us about any funny or strange incident that has happened to you at a match.
At the World Cup in South Africa, my best mate and I went to the Slovenia game in Port Elizabeth. Their fans had been a bit rowdy by all accounts but we were doing our best to spread bonhomie and change the image of the average England fan. We ended up chatting with some police officers and they didn't mind us drinking and as we stood there chewing the fat, the guy I was talking to announced he was the chief of police not just for the match but for the city itself. He laughed as I backed off, instinctively, and then invited me into his portacabin HQ. Inside, he handed us a bottle of Jagermeister he'd confiscated from the Slovenians and told us we could have it if we wanted ... it was rude not to, especially in the spirit of international relations

3. Who was your first ever favourite player?
Peter Barnes, but before he played for us. When he signed he was utter shyte :wtf:

4. Who is your current favourite player?
Charlie Taylor. He'll play for England one day, you see :shh:

5. What is your favourite restaurant/food type?
Pan-Asian, where you can pick and choose a few dishes :P

6. What hobbies/pastimes do you share with your partner?
I'm single and I resent the way that question was worded ! I would imagine most couples probably have different hobbies anyway ..
But .. I love the cinema and have an unlimited membership; live gigs of any kind; I'm a hifi nut and collect records; I also collect and play Subbuteo; video games take up a lot of my time, mainly FM and Thief, both on the PC :ugeek:

7. What is your favourite holiday destination and why?
I'm obliged to say South Africa as my sister and her family live there, but apart from that I love the US and Germany is hard to beat : so much to do and the people are great fun

8. If you got chance to see any deceased musician who would it be?
Ella Fitzgerald, preferably with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. My parents saw them together in 1958 8-)

9. If you were just leaving school again with your adult knowledge what career path would you like to follow?
I think I would join the forces, probably the RAF. At the time I couldn't hack the discipline, but with age comes wisdom and I think I would've loved it :)

10. If you won a large sum of money to give to any single Charity which would you choose?
I already give to Cancer Research and Oxfam, but probably the former as neither private industry nor the government seem to be doing enough. It feels like every year the media say "We're five years from a cure for cancer" .. but I read those stories twenty years ago and still way too many people die from it

1. What is your most memorable Leeds Utd match?
In matches I’ve been to, definitely beating Man Utd in 1997. David Wetherall header. Not a great Leeds side, but they worked like dogs that day. Remember staying in the ground for ages singing to the away end. Afterwards, the Man Utd bus got the usual treatment outside and Brian McClair had enough so stuck his middle finger up at us…
Otherwise, I’m afraid that listening to the 1987 play-off final replay on a crackly radio in Ireland has stuck with me. I started supporting Leeds as a 7 year old during the relegation season of 1982, so 1987 was like a world cup final to me. Gutted still for Billy Bremner, Sheridan et al.

2. Tell us about any funny or strange incident that has happened to you at a match.
Ireland v Scotland, Lansdowne Road 1987. The Garda (Police) Brass Band was ‘entertaining’ the crowd before kick-off. Amid the boos and jeers, someone threw an apple down from the upper tier, straight at the Bands front line. Luckily for him, the Trumpet player spotted it, sidestepped beautifully and retook his place without missing a note. Crowd appreciated it and cheered them for the rest of their set.

3. Who was your first ever favourite player?
First Leeds idol was John Sheridan, but absolutely love Lucas Radebe to this day.

4. Who is your current favourite player?
Would have said Berardi, but I think Ayling is shading it now…. But Jansson is ok too :D

5. What is your favourite restaurant/food type?
Italian, but best single meal I ever had was Tuna cooked on a spit in Fiji.

6. What hobbies/pastimes do you share with your partner?
Luckily herself loves sports too, so football, hurling and rugby are high on our list.

7. What is your favourite holiday destination and why?
Love visiting Leeds obviously, but Thailand and Australia were special when backpacking in 2001.

8. If you got chance to see any deceased musician who would it be?
Even though I’m a Curehead (in mind, not body – the boss would never let me away with a head of hair like that) I’d love to have seen Freddie Mercury in his pomp.

9. If you were just leaving school again with your adult knowledge what career path would you like to follow?
I’d have avoided playing a local Cup Final. Just back from a shoulder injury and broke my leg. I was due to sign semi-pro terms with an Irish League team the following Monday…. Ah well.

10. If you won a large sum of money to give to any single Charity which would you choose?
Meningitis Research. I had it and wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.
"An astonishing number of people despise Leeds United or what Leeds United stand for. But this club was never made for them." - Phil Hay
