Might I suggest you fund a PhD program at Loughborough University to find out the answer to that ??

Plus, you need to quantify the question anyway.

If you're talking participation then angling is number one in this country. Football has been dwindling for years ...
If it's popularity as a spectator sport, do you mean TV figures (easily number one) or physical numbers through a turnstile (also number one I would guess) ??
