I'm going to be interviewing one of my heroes soon ...

Roy Ayers

He's playing The Brook in Southampton in mid-December and I thought I'd try and blag a couple of tickets in exchange for a review, so I asked the editor/owner of The And Guide (the free entertainment paper I write for) to sort it out and he's gone one better because the venue want me to do an interview with the great man.
I've now asked if Roser, my gf, can shoot the gig for the paper as well as she's a photographer - could be our first assignment together :)

Excited isn't the word ..

Every time I've DJed anywhere I've always played at least one of his records, normally two or three .. the man's a bona fide genius and giant of the jazz-funk world !

Here's my mix of some of his stuff ...

And a selection of his most popular songs ...

Turns out Southampton and not Africa is 'motherland'. Enjoy.
When I was young I said to my mum, 'are the hills in the distance America?'

I wouldn't go that far, mate 8-)

There's a sizeable Afro-Caribbean population here and a half decent soul scene, though :ugeek:

Ah well, so it turns out I won't be interviewing the man after all, though I'm still on the guest list with a "plus one" as I'll be reviewing the gig anyway.

Shame, but his agency only wanted interviews that would boost ticket sales for the tour, so one coming out six weeks after the event didn't really suit them I suppose

Just about every soul fan in the area will be there so it should be pretty packed. The venue holds about 300-400 and I reckon I'll know half the crowd by name and the other half will be on nodding terms

It's their loss Rigger, and short-sighted of them too. Guest List presence should soothe you eh :D

No, he's American and it's spelt differently anyway.

Either you're both just into straight rock and pop or you're too old.

Soul.
Jazz funk.
Jazz.

If you're not into those genres and dancing in proper clubs as opposed to mainstream discos then you wouldn't know him, I guess.
