Nice one PW. Where did you dig that up from? The live performance was at either the Tower cinema or the one close by. Can't remember the name of it. It was probably the Tower as my Dad was Musical Director for Tower Ballrooms so would have been able to get tickets.

John, the plot thickens.
Here's Ella in Holland in 1958, performing with The Oscar Peterson Trio :

Must have been a European tour. Oscar Peterson was my favourite pianist ever and you are right about Ella.

I love a bit of Oscar but Bill Evans is right up there too, as well as Herbie Hancock of course.

Regarding pianists, we haven't mentioned 'Mrs Mills'. Google it if you haven't heard of her. :D

Lou Reed supporting U2 and doing an encore in 87, REM supporting U2 in 82, REM blowing me away at Earls Court and again in Hyde Park when Patti Smith joined them to sing Everybody Hurts, not a dry eye in the park. Seeing A fledgling Big Country getting booed off stage supporting Alice Cooper in 84. Seeing the Cult 3 nights running at Hammersmith Odeon and then at Brixton Academy in 87.
It’s funny, I talk about these gigs to guys at work who are in their early to late twenty’s, none of them have seen a live band. They would all rather go clubbing listening to that Stormzy fella and Pooh like that. So glad I’m old and lived through the live music era.

It's still the live music era, Cheffy. I've seen a couple of bands this month - mates bands - old gits making a joyful racket. ;) Next weekend (I think) I'll be watching a young band - sons of mates - at their single release gig. They are already on the 6Music playlist. If that sort of thing still exists. I've seen 4 other "bigger" artists this year, including Squeeze's Glenn Tilbrook who was awesome. I've got a festival coming up in August too, so that's another dozen or so live acts.

Just found a programme for The Police's 1983 Synchronicity Tour mega-gig at the NEC Birmingham. It was a cracking gig. I'm no drummer but I was in awe of Stewart Copeland's drumming. Andy Summers was a guitar god and that Sting bloke was no slouch. Page 5 has a list of quotes from various publications. Woman's World said "The record sensation of 1983 is definitely Synchronicity by The Police". And who can argue with that?
