Agree we buy meat, bread, fruit & veg locally but we get all our tinned stuff & wine etc delivered.

Got into it by accident really. Mrs MW was in Colombia for Christmas, the snow came down and I didn't fancy driving. So I got a delivery from Sainsburys and haven't looked back.

We've had deliveries from all the majors (although ASDA has been struck off for what they did to their staff recently) and Ocado, who have a number of Waitrose lines. Also we get wine and gin delivered from Aldi (they don't deliver groceries) without a carriage charge. A friend has alerted us that Iceland do free deliveries as well but we haven't tried them yet.

On almost all occasions it works smoothly and the delivery people are friendly and helpful. If something does go wrong - Morrison's van broke down once, for example - they compensate you with a voucher. The fuel saving of driving to the supermarket and not having to traipse up and down the aisles to look for you want is well worth the delivery charge - Sainsbury's was just 50p the other day!

We're fortunate that Mrs MW passes through Lidl's car park on her way back from work in the morning, so we get our fresh stuff there.

So, yes, definitely a lot to be said for it.

I suppose it might be a bit remiss of me to neglect to mention that Jeanna works for Waitrose as a cook, so she often gets to bring samples home as well as reduced stuff and - incredibly - items that are about to be thrown out, like a beef joint we had the other day that was absolutely beautiful :D

After reading this am going to give it a try using Tesco though looking at the site I’ll avoid the weekend.

One thing i would say is that the Shopping experience is still a important part of the day for some people of a certain age. We have quite afew customers who come in the shop on a daily basis (part of their daily routine i would imagine) and you can tell they look forward to speaking to somebody. I think some customers like to make use of their free buss pass aswell.

Am i right in thinking if they don't have your exact item, then they will substitute it for something similar, and what happens if you have a quality issue with some items do you just send them back with the driver?

Some of the supermarkets send an e-mail on the morning of the delivery, telling you what is not coming and/or what has been substituted for an alternative. Alternatively, the driver tells you when he arrives. Either way, you just accept it or not, and obviously they return your money. Occasionally, it works out quite well if you order something and they’ve only got it in a larger size, as you get the larger one for the price of the smaller :thumbup:.

It’s very rare when something arrives damaged, but if it does, and the driver has already left, you just drop them an e-mail and they refund your money.

I know you won’t like this mate, but I honestly can’t understand why folk still go in supermarkets for the reasons I mentioned previously, although I appreciate for some the company and getting out of the house may be a big thing.

I was a student at Sainsburys when I was younger and we always had old dears coming in for a chat.
One thought I was a deadringer for Stewart Granger (I had hair back then ;) ) and would badger me for a good twenty minutes on a Saturday, typically across three visits : "Oh, I forgot the cat food. Did you ever see The Prisoner of Zenda ?" :lol:
