On this day in1957, this song by Buddy Holly reached No1 in the charts.
The line "That'll be the day" was taken by Buddy Holly from a film 'The Searchers' in which John Wayne used the line repeatedly.
This song was the first demo recorded by the Beatles, then the Quarrymen.
Such was the influence on the Beatles, that Paul Mcartney held parties celebrating Buddy Holly's birthday.
2 years later a tragic plane crash claiming Holly's life.
Other musicians also on the plane, including Ritchie Valens, here with La bamba.
Ritchie couldn't speak Spanish, he just learned the words and pronunciation of this Mexican folk song and turned it into rock and roll.

Just listened to Que Sera Sera by Doris Day. When I was in Singapore in 1956 it was top of the charts. If I listen to it now and close my eyes, I could be sitting on my bunk in the barrack room listening to it. It really is weird the way it takes me back. Not just the music and lyrics but the 'feeling' I get. One of these days I'm going to open my eyes and find myself in Singapore!

2 'slow burners' here. might take a couple of listens to absorb the stories or message .Words are stronger than instruments in both songs.
A great story from Cat Stevens which could have been believed in mediaeval times, the era which seems to be portrayed in the music and lyrics.
Listen for the line where the story changes at "A basket by my door".
On to Smiling Faces Sometimes. Late 1960's musicians started commenting on social issues in their songs.A group of Motown musicians (Temptations, marvin gaye, Undisputed Truth) were moving away from the traditional Motown 'Baby Love' drivel to more meaningful messages reflecting the issues of the day.Doesn't come more direct in your face than this one.

Manic Street Preachers' latest album: The Ultra Vivid Lament. It's on repeat in the car at the moment. Superb.

During Lockdown James Dean Bradfield learned to play the piano (and obviously listened to a lot of ABBA). The chorus of this starts like a teeny pop song but we're soon walking through the apocalypse. So that's ok. :)

The Kinks "Ultimate Collection"

Ray Davies certainly up there with the great songwriters in my view.

Superb Sniffer.
Has the same effect on me that the Stones 'Gimme Shelter' did, versions with the Vietnam backdrop, apocalypse from 50 years ago.
Not posting video, some people might find them offensive, I respect that.
