Jimmy Speirs

This site is dedicated to James Hamilton Speirs - Jimmy Speirs - professional footballer and, ultimately, war hero. Speirs was signed to Leeds City by Herbert Chapman, and captained the team. This is an exceptional site, and provides a detailed and insightful look into a hero's life.

From the main page: "Jimmy's football career began with juvenile club Annandale, near his Govanhill home.  He moved into junior football with Maryhill (Glasgow), and progressed to the senior game with Rangers, Clyde, Bradford City and Leeds City.  He became a full Scottish International and, whilst with Bradford City, captained his team to victory in the FA Cup Final of 1911, when he scored the winning goal.

Jimmy played his final game as a professional (for Leeds City) at the end of the 1914-15 season, and then volunteered to enlist in the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders.  He was posted to France in March 1916, won the Military Medal for bravery in the field, and was promoted to Sergeant.  Jimmy died from wounds received on 20 August 1917 at Passchendaele and is buried at Dochy Farm New British Cemetery near Ieper (Ypres), Belgium."
