Jabba's Comments

One of the many north-easterners picked up by Leeds at the start of the club's life, Billy Down was between the sticks for Leeds' first league game, but was replaced by the popular Fred Whalley at the end of that season. Down won his place back when Whalley departed, and had several spells in the side in 1924-25 before moving on, first to Doncaster then to Burnley. A damaged kidney, suffered as a result of a "robust" challenge in a local derby against Blackburn caused him serious medical problems, and although he subsequently played some games for non-league sides, his league career ended in 1929. He died back home in the north-east in early 1977.
