Chris Fairclough was signed by Howard Wilkinson in 1989 and
was immediately installed at the heart of the defensive line-up
that gained promotion from Division 2 and subsequently went on
to win the Division 1 championship.
In his six years at Elland Road, he was almost ever-present and
immensely popular with the fans, winning the supporters club 'Player
of the Year' award in his first full season. His partnership with
Chris Whyte was a key factor in the Championship win, but with his
30th birthday behind him, he was deemed surplus to requirements and
departed to Bolton.
He must regard himself as very unlucky to never pick up a full
England cap, and stayed in the game - returning to Yorkshire after
spells with Bolton and Notts County - as captain of York City.
He retired through injury in February 2001, but was looking to
earn his UEFA coaching badge in order to progress on that side
of the game.
