Arthur Hydes was a real pocket-battleship of a centre-forward. At just 5' 8", he was rejected by Southport and started his footballing career in junior football in Barnsley. When he came to Elland Road he won a regular place in the side and was top scorer for three years in a row before injuries started to affect his game. After moving to Newport just before the war, he guested for York and Exeter - who he joined shortly after the end of the conflict. He only managed 4 games for the Grecians before persistent leg injuries forced him to retire from the professional game. He died in 1990.

Gloria Berry (nee Hydes) says: Arthur Hydes was my father and what a great footballer he was.He would always spend time with anyone who talked about football. The family is lost without him.
