Ian Lawson was seen as a great talent as a young player, but with Burnley's Championship-winning squad ahead of him, he failed to find himself a regular first-team berth. Leeds picked him up in 1962 and he became an important player in the squad that won promotion from Division 2, but he found himself marginalised as the team made its way in Division 1. He moved on to Palace and Port Vale (and Barnsley but he never appeared for the first team) but was never as effective as he was in those first couple of years at Leeds.
