A Brazilian World Cup winner who was also part of AC Milan's
European Champions League winning side in 2003. He first came to
prominence in 1999 in the game between Man U and SE Palmeiras - his
team since 1996 - and the following summer moved to Italy to join AC
Milan. His time at Milan has been plagued with injury, and has rarely
been a regular starter. However he played six games in WC2002 and
picked up a winners' medal with Brazil. A shoulder injury at the start
of the 2002/03 season further restricted his appearances, and although
he returned to the side in time for the Champions League Final, he
picked up another injury there that kept him out of the national side
through the summer. Joined Leeds on a one-year loan just before the
transfer deadline in August 2003. The defence was in turmoil at the
time after the departure of Jon Woodgate and Rio Ferdinand, and with
Dom Matteo shifted into midfield, but even so his contribution to
stopping opponents was pretty woeful. He did score twice against ManU,
but there was a collective sigh of relief from the fans when he
returned from international duty with an Achilles injury, and with
costs being cut to the bone, he agreed to return to Milan in
January. He has since been loaned out to recently-promoted Siena.

Robert Metcalfe says: I think Roque Junior is a great player. He
played for us early in the season and did well - scoring twice against
Manchester in the Carling Cup! What has happened to him? Does anyone
know? Jabba says - he picked up an achilles injury while out playing a
WC qualifier for Brazil.
