Jabba's Comments

An outstanding attacking inside-left, Eric Stephenson joined the professional ranks with Leeds at the age of 20. He was twice selected for England - against Scotland and Northern Ireland in 1938 and 1939 - and looked to be a player on the up when war broke out. He made numerous appearances for the club during the disrupted wartime seasons.

Eric Stephenson was the only Leeds player known to have been killed in World War 2. He died while on active service in Burma having achieved the rank of Major: Leeds played a benefit for his widow against Glasgow Celtic, and a memorial stained glass window now sits in a Leeds church.

Mr W Doughty (Worksop, Notts) says: I played with him in the army. He was SGT PT Instructor. He played L.Half. He was the best player I have ever seen. I called him inch perfect he never wasted a pass.

Dan says: He was my Grandad's best mate. I have several pictures if you'd like them? A true gentleman with qualities long lost to time such as honour, civility and good heartedness
