A surprise signing in December 1999 after spending 14 years at
Blackburn, Jason is a talented winger who has been restricted by
injury before his transfer and maybe needed a new challenge to wake
him up. He also provided cover in midfield or up front for Blackburn
and may be required to drop in to left back for Leeds in the event of
an injury to Ian Harte.
He was extremely unlucky (or not, depending on how you look at it)
to pick up an injury in May and so missed out on an almost certain
chance of a place in Euro 2000. Kevin Keegan made it clear he was
still in the frame but he never really got a run at club level
to move himself back into international reckoning.
In 2000-01 he was mainly used as a sub, and his performances were
patchy when he came on. Maybe he needs to rethink a little about his
approach, regain some of the confidence that saw him beating defenders
all ends up at Blackburn and he'll find himself in with a good chance
of at least a regular appearance from the bench - but it's hard to see
him finding a regular starting place with the current squad.
In 2001-02 he was again used as a sub, with the occasional start
here and there. He didn't do badly when he was required to play - and
it was been a bit surprising that he didn't get more chances with
Harry Kewell and Seth Johnson injured and not much else in the way of
left-sided players in the side.
Under Terry Venables he found himself on the fringes of the squad
at first but has worked himself back into contention and has been
making regular appearances on the left side of midfield, once as a
left-back (big mistake!) and also playing a more central midfield
role. He's doing just enough to retain his place at the moment - but
without a decent target man in the middle, he's not getting many
chances to play in those telling crosses we know he's capable of.
He made the initial squad for the first game of the 2003-04 season,
but it's hard to see him offering much more than injury cover.
Anon says: Put him in 1st team squad
lee says: bloody brilliant on his day
Ian Hamer says: I knew Jason at primary school and I also played
with him for High Lawn football team. Not seen him for 6 years now
but if he reads this, I am sure he will want to contact me
Max Harlow says: Undoubtedly the unsung hero of Leeds United. When
he scored against Bolton, I was absolutely delighted, and you could
tell from the photos that he was too (bless his little cotton socks!)
From kick-off to the final whistle, you always get 110% from Jase,
mainly because he knows how easy it is to find yourself out of the
team for months on end - so he makes the most of it when he does play,
and has become Goalmaker Extraordinaire this season. The number of
times (in any season) I've seen him get into a seemingly impossible
situation at the top left corner, with a couple of opposing players
hassling him, only for him inexplicably to get the ball past them and
in front of goal for Viduka & Co. (not that they always make use of
it). He picks up the odd booking here and there, like anyone else,
but his discipline has never been a serious concern. And as if that
wasn't enough, now he can play at left-back as well. Why on Earth
does everyone whinge on about the 'left-sided problem' in the England
team - the solution to that problem has spent the last 3 years wearing
number 16 at Elland Road! Altogether now (1, 2, 3...): WILCOX FOR
ENGLAND!
Zeus says: Jason Wilcox is a great player, maybe he doesn't get
some good balls from this lacklustre midfield
liam says: Jason Wilcox is s**t he was a waste of time and he
should have stayed at Blackburn. He is to slow and can't cross a ball
to save this life
D says: Liam, you're a t*****r. Jason Wilcox's crosses are
brilliant, as is his all round game ans attitude. As a Blackburn fan I
was very sorry to see him leave. His movement off the ball and
comitment are superb. He doesn't need to beat players with his pace
(which he does possess) as he can put in a decent cross from
anywhere. Jason should be given a chance in the England squad, if
injuries hadn't been to cruel to him he would have had dozens of caps
by now.
Ade (Scotland) says: Jason's a very under-rated player. He's a
great crosser of the ball and his wing-play creates great chances for
the strikers. He doesn't get enough appearances - which is a pity. I
can see him moving away from Leeds soon.
rob says: wat a legend. I knew him at primary school and he is by
far the best player in the world by far. He could easily get in Real
Madrids team.Should be at ARSENAL he would feel more at home with
better players just like him.
Danno says: Are you lot serious? Do you know who Jason Wilcox is?
He's footballs equivalent of Frankensteins monster - if you take the
worst assets of some distinctly average players, and stick them
together, you'll get Jason Wilcox. He's the guy with the pace of
Helder Postiga, the Phil Neville calibre "bag of tricks" and the
crossing ability of Jesper Gronkjaer. Anyone who believes this "former
England player" (remember, Geoff Thomas and Carlton Palmer are former
England players too) is any good, will probably get to see the best of
him in Div 1 next year. Once Leeds handful of remaining "good" players
jump ship in the next few weeks, all you'll be left with is mediocre
cr@p like Wilcox.
